In this Episode Nicole Weathers the Mental Storm of a Martial Law Commemeration September 20th 2008 Sept 21 is the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines by Ferdinand Marcos. Although I doubt the word anniversary is proper when talking about a suspension of all democratic rights. What runs through my mind on a day like today? I have no real cultural reference for interpreting a day like Sept 21.

I graduated in May of 2006 with a BA in Human Rights from St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, Canada. At that point in my life I wanted to get some field work experience in human rights. I was also interested in understanding human rights from the ground level, from the people living and experiencing the abuse. To work in the field of human rights having only experienced comfortable Canada seemed fradulant to me.
