Tradition
The gathering of family to make Sumalac is a long Uzbek tradition when celebrating the coming of spring, the Navruz holiday. It stems from an old Uzbek fable about a woman who had nothing to feed her children and no one to turn to. She but two stones into a pot, prayed to Allah to save her children and fell asleep. In the morning when she woke the pot was filled with a sweet wheat broth that she feed to her children to keep them alive.
