Slept fairly well. The storm took off about 5 this morning. The Skipper did not expect it to last so long or to blow so hard, the glass having gone down very little. Put on all my winter things, the weather being much colder. Went on the Poop before breakfast, some sea on but not so much as I should have thought. While on the Poop, a heavy spray broke amid ship and the wind carrying our way, the Captain and one of the passengers caught it, but I escaped. During the night a sea broke the sheep pen up - the sheep were rescued and put in the pig coop but all the ducks but four were however, washed overboard. Had a strong turn of rheumatism. In the morning before breakfast, we were going under lower topsails, try sail (set for the first time), main and fore-staysails. Out on deck with sea boots and Ulster on - caught by a sea as I was going on to the Poop, the sea came some 6 inches up my boots and fully tried them. A good deal of spray came over the deck all day. Therm. 48ยบ. Bar 29.98.

12 noon: Lat 41.22S & Long 42.30E. Days run 273 miles.

This diary is being kept during my voyage to Australia and back which I am undertaking for the benefit of my health and as a cure (light and inexpensive) for headaches. I left England on Thursday 18th April 1878.
