It is going to be HOT today although we will be travelling towards a cool change. The forecast for Nullarbor is 42°C, but not until 4.00pm when we will be long gone and hundreds of kilometres away. The forecast for Balladonia, our destination for tonight is similar but it is expected to be much cooler there by the afternoon. What will we encounter along the way? Regardless of the heat we need to cover 687 kilometres today, so we headed off early again departing the roadhouse at 8.06am. Although the sun had risen it was hiding behind a cloud bank, so the light conditions were dull. It was dark enough for the truck to decide that it should have the headlights on. Hmmn, is it light enough for all the nocturnal wildlife to have gone to ... read more

So, we purchased extra supplies for our breakfasts across the Nullarbor and, wouldn’t you know it? – this morning we had a voucher for complimentary continental breakfasts! Oh well everything is processed and packaged and will keep for another morning. We decided that we would find the bakery in town for rolls/sandwiches for lunch again today. Bernie Googled and was told that one bakery is permanently closed and the one that remains in business is a little out of the town centre. Google guided us there and there was precisely nothing when we reached the pin drop on the map. Google strikes again. I suggested cruising down the main street to see what we could see but, no, Bernie asked Google again. At least on the second attempt she did guide us to the Ceduna Bakery ... read more

We were up early again this morning with the alarm going off for the second morning in a row at 5.55am. That’s no time to be waking up when you’re on holidays, but we are planning to drive another 750 kilometres today and want to be in Ceduna before dusk. We started well with a small bathroom malfunction. We both went to the toilet during the night and the toilet flushed properly. After the alarm, I rose, went to the loo and flushed it without any problem and then I got in the shower. Bernie went to the loo (which was separated from the shower and basin area) and when he was done he pressed the button and … nothing! There was no water in the cistern to flush his business down. Oh no!! Fortunately we ... read more

Sydney, spectacularly draped around its glorious harbor and beaches, has visual wow factor like few other cities. Scratch the surface and it only gets better. Cheeky, brash, intoxicating – this city has been naturally blessed like few other cities on Earth. A 40-mile string of glistening sandy beaches bracket one of the world’s most spectacular harbors: it’s an Australian icon, where getting outdoors is everything, whether you are surfing the waves, marveling on a coastal walk or al fresco dining on sumptuous seafood. This multicultural, hedonistic city has numerous districts to explore. At some stage you’ll almost certainly end up at the Rocks - you haven’t really been to Sydney if you don’t. The Rocks, unrecognizable from the squalid place it was in the convict era, now serves as an "olde-worlde" tourist focus. There are a ... read more

NOTE:For anyone who is interested we decided (belatedly) to blog the NSW Road Trip we completed in December/January. Use the ‘Previous Entry’ button to navigate to those entries. On the road again! After our road trip to NSW in December/January we are off again - this time heading west across the Nullarbor to explore south-west Western Australia. Because we are both obsessed (Tracey a little more so!) with achieving all of the goals set for us by our Apple watches each day, the plan was to leave at 7.05am after we had achieved a stand hour for the 7-8.00am hour! We were not far off schedule pulling out of the driveway at 7.20am on a cool Melbourne morning. Bernie took the first spell at the wheel and drove us as far as the Services at Ravenswood. ... read more

Queensland is Australia's take on paradise. Warm, laidback, and heartbreakingly beautiful, its sweep of pristine beaches, luxuriant jungle and ethereal peaks conjure a southern Shangri-La. Situated in the northeastern region of the continent, it is the 2nd largest and 3rdmost populous of all the Australian states. Due to its size, Queensland's geographical features and climates are diverse, including tropical rainforests, rivers, coral reefs, mountain ranges and sandy beaches in its tropical and sub-tropical coastal regions, as well as deserts and savanna in the semi-arid and desert climatic regions of its interior. Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Far North Queensland lies the sultry haven of Port Douglas, and along with the city of Cairns (aka Yorkey’s Knob) - just 40 miles away – the gateways to two UNESCO World Heritage-listed natural wonders, the ... read more

Though I’ve been to Sheepyard Flat I can't remember doing anything here, so today is my chance. Davons Flat is only a short walk from where I will be picked up tomorrow, so I have the whole day to rest and explore. Though there are some good day hikes from here I want to give my feet a break so take just a short walk along the river to Frys Hut. The hut is impressive and would have been a comfortable place to live. Fred Fly built it in the 1940s and it was his home until his death in 1971. On the way I pass a large chimney, a legacy of the gold rush years in this valley. The gold rush here was short lived and a financial failure for just about all the companies ... read more

I was cold last night, but the camp looks good in the morning sun. I don’t need to start too early, but the 1st 7.5 km today are uphill all the way to the Eight Mile Gap (1150m) and I want to do this before the day gets too hot. The walk is a steady climb but not too steep so I find I can keep walking without needing too many breaks. It takes me about 3 hours to the gap where I stop to rest and check to see if I have phone reception. While I’m sending my messages 2 couples arrive in 4wds towing caravans. I talk to one couple, they are off to Refrigerator Gap and are volunteers for the Oscar 100 event that is on this weekend. From now it is all ... read more
