I have to start this entry with a little discovery I’ve made in my travels (these and prior ones) so as not to appear a wee bit jaded in my adventures and ramblings along. So here it is...cities are great. They are wonderful places to live, to work, to eat, to do business, to party, to shop, to socialize, to raise children but they are not great places to visit (or at least they aren't for me). This is by no fault of the cities themselves...they try...with their museums of the southern railroad crossing through the southern alps of New South Wales and Victoria...they do really try. But they just don't hold your interest for long...now all cities aren't this way. Take London, New York, Rome, San Francisco...these are cities with personalities and a breath and ... read more

I arrived in Queenstown yesterday afternoon after a short drive from Wanaka. We were lucky and were greeted with beautiful weather. The scenery in Queenstown is amazing. This town is surronded by a mountain range called The Remarkables and is on the shore of a crystal clear (but very cold) lake. Queenstown is know to be a bit touristy, which I could definately see. There is a lot to do and see in this area it is no wonder that the town is popular. Yesterday I took it easy. After much diliberation I decided to pass on bungy jumping. A bridge just outside of Queenstown is where bungy jumping began, which is one of the reasons Queenstown is considered the adventure capital of New Zealand. On a walk around the lake though I managed to fall ... read more

Made it - yeehaar me grandma What began as Ugly Lame Bastard but preferred as Honourable Heathcliff, transforms into Saschua Mitsubishi temporarily, only to arrive in Melbourne @ 8.30, as U, Lord Bacchus. Yes, slightly more fitting... although the game continues... entries readily accepted & encouraged NOW! So... struggling slightly with gear changes whilst navigating right turns from left lanes in Mlebourne's web, but eventually made it to greet ‘Dr’ Phil from Bendigo (originally met at Confest) and he became the first new passenger of Lord Bacchus! Spent couple hours at a community Latin dancing event - fun enough. October 30 Why is it that daylight saving creating the illusion of the ‘loss’ of an hour… demands two extra hours of sleep? Met Ella, Dee & Bryan’s gorgeous blue eyed babe. She is something very special ... read more

The last day of hiking and we get up to a light rain. By the time we are ready to leave the hut it is raining pretty hard, so out comes the rain gear for us and our packs. Although we start out with a pretty steep climb from the beach, it is a pretty light hiking day. With the rain, we are thankful for that. There is not a lot of ups and downs, most is pretty level and hugs the side of cliffs at the coastline. The narrow trail is not for the faint hearted, with shear drop offs. It is about a four-hour hike with no shelters so we don’t take breaks. At the end there is a long boardwalk causeway over the estuary that ends at Marahau. We see a little café ... read more

Today was another driving day. We had a great walk along a beach looking for Humpback Whales in the distance, but saw none. Beautiful walk anyway :) Also I've been asking if we could soon have a "resting"day. I can just feel that my head needs to cope with all these amazing impressions of all the new stuff going on, and besides it's getting a little stressful always being pulled out of bed, having to pack and then setting off, but that's the way of things when you're travelling with two morning people and you are yourself more of a getting-up-at-noon person ;) Anyway I think the others won't mind, though we decided to wait till after Brisbane, 'cause it's even warmer up there - and it'll be before we reach Salty Croc waters :) Will ... read more

We were lucky enough to have a few nights at Victor Harbor to catch up with friends and do 3 walks. Victor Harbor is a fabulous sea-side town about 75 minutes South of Adelaide. It is a retirement hub and every time we visit, there seems to be more and more houses springing up! It has been the site for a whaling industry - but now eco-tourism promotes whale-watching through the winter primarily of the Southern right whale. Some web sites to visit to learn more about Victor Harbor include * the Tourism centre and * the Whale Centre. We did three walks over the three days. * the almost compulsory Granite Island walk (2 hours) * the walk to the summit of the Bluff... read more

We set off today down the west coast. There was nothing there! No towns for miles. We drove through Dargaville and Helensville. We arrived in Auckland early evening and went for a well deserved beer. Tried to call parents at 6am sunday morning! oopps! 31.10.05 Got up and headed for the Coramandel, Thames. Had a walk around the town and had our lunch on our own private beach. Mel sunbathed whilst Andy played in the rock pools. Stayed in Waimou just north of Thames. 1.11.05 Today we went to an old gold mine and stamper battery. This area is known for gold. Coramandel is where they first found gold in New Zealand in late 1800's. In Waihi there is still a working open cast mine today that produces millions of dollars a week. The old guy ... read more

Greetings from Godzone (God's own country)! Cait and I landed in Auckland yesterday morning. We're at the Fat Camel hostel in downtown. Lots of young backpackers, loud colorful decor and clean, if impersonal. We've already done so much in just two days. The Sky Tower is the tallest point in the Southern Hemisphere at 382 meters (? Not sure about that fact.) We've seen at least half a dozen people jump off it! On Monday, Cameron Dias jumped off! They attach you to cables and you have a controlled fall for about 12 seconds. Parnell Road is filled with cafes, a GREAT chocolate boutique, restaurants and craft stores. Queen Street is the downtown with courtyards of Asian food stands, tall buildings, designer stores and the only apartment buildings we've seen here in Auckland (everyone owns houses). ... read more
