Well, this tour will certainly remain unforgotten! Highlights: floodings, a psycho tourguide, broken bones, me being kicked out of an organized tour, the death of all my electronic devices, a fairy tale scene and a lesson about justice.... But one after another 😜. I was a bit concerned if the tour would take place now as there were reports about massive floodings all over the east coast so I emailed the company and they confirmed that yes, the tour was happening!Okay, so I flew from Sydney to Cairns. Cairns is not really an interesting city - quite touristic but it is a good place to start different tours from there. Remarkable were the heapes of asian tourists - by far the majority and I was told it was a treatment for them due to the celebration ... read more

So two weeks ago I was in Greymouth and I decided to look for a travel mate. After hearing back from a guy named Gabe from L.A., we decided he would meet me in Greymouth and we would continue down south along the west coast in his van. While waiting for Gabe to arrive, I met a girl from Wisconsin named Mary in my hostel. She was also planning on traveling the west coast. On Gabe's way down he met Christian, from Switzerland, at a lookout point. Christian came down to Greymouth and we all decided to travel together in Christian and Gabe's vans. Seeing and hiking up to Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers was on my list of things to do before I leave NZ. I've heard their intensity and beauty are undeniable. So we ... read more

Wednesday May 8, 2013 I made it. After two more short flights, we touched down in Mt. Hagen, PNG and were picked up at the airport by 4 of the missionaies from Kudjip station. The best part of the whole day was having Kumi, a native guy with whom I worked construction last year, call me out by name and give me a hug after seeing me come out of the airport. The 45 minute drive from the airport to the mission station was beautiful. It hasn't rained in the past 6 days and so many villagers were burning the grass off of their fields to prepare them for planting. We past trucks carrying loads of coffee cherries and there were natives selling fruits and vegetables along the entire stretch of the road. I rode in ... read more

....and so, more travels afoot for Pilate Peter and Cruisin Susan. This time in keeping with the watery theme we are off to Russia to cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg along the Volga-? Waterway with 12 other friends of like mind. To whet the appetite so to speak we will tempt you with some preliminaries. We have just returned from a six day sojourn with elder daughter Ella and her Spanish partner Dani who have ensconced themselves in Potts point having decided things were a bit depressing in Barcelona just for now. We of course are delighted they made the move. Dani's family not quite so but they appreciate the opportunities Australia has to offer at the moment. Dani has completed his degree in health sciences and Ella has returned to her work as a ... read more

We have stoped a couple of times previously in Ceduna. This is a town where there is a real cultural mix and a happy hunting ground for lovers of Aboriginal Art. There are some very talented artists here, and every time we come, we just love viewing their latest works. The best of the best are outside our budget, but are wonderfully crafted, often blending aboriginal traditional techniques within modern art styles. Almost always these works tell a story. One we admired was a traditional styled 'Bush Fire'. The patterns and styling were fantastic. Ceduna is also a grain export port, and the dock was busy during our stay. The plains from the top of the Eyre Peninsular to Ceduna and west are very productive with a mix of grains, canola and sheep stations. The farmers ... read more

For the last week I have been staying in Williamstown in order to plan the next leg of the journey. Had a few days on the beach as the weather warmed up, spent some time exploring Williamstown and Newport and having lunch with Rosemary and John, at the their daughter Janes Vietnamese restaurant. Hope the food in Vietnam is as good as the food was there, yummy. The next stage is the Great Ocean road, I have hired a car and plan to take a week travelling along the coast. It's not a huge distance but I think it's worth taking a little time and discovering all the small towns along the coast. Also intend to drop in to a couple of National Parks whilst visitIng the area.... read more

Dear all, Wow what a busy few days! When I last wrote we were getting ready to meet Ash's friend Peach. We met him on Oxford street and went to see his friend in a hardcore gig. This was also someone that Ash knew, so there we were in Sydney with three people in the room from around Canterbury UK! So my first ever hardcore gig. For those of you that have never had the pleasure I shall try to describe it. Very loud drums, a man screaming something loud and shouty and everyone dancing in a crazy fashion. If I'm honest it was a bit like going to a trance gig, good drum beat but slightly different vibe and not as chilled out. Great for people watching though. After the gig we went to a ... read more

Goodbye NewZealand. The time has come to say goodbye to this extraordinarily beautiful island. It had to end some time. I had the most wonderful 10 days here. Being an English speaking country made it all that more easier and enjoyable as you could talk to locals and understand the commentaries much better. I was very skeptical about going on a tour with Haka Tours as it was targeting a younger group, below 30s and was a bit afraid that I would be left out while the others went on bungy jumping, para gliding and freefall jumps. The alternative was to tour with older people probably Chinese or Japanese. That is another thing you notice, the number of Chinese tourists. With the increasing number of middle class what happened with Japan in the 70s and 80s ... read more

Well, our window, unfortunately, isn’t fixed because an incorrectly sized window was sent in error and much as we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Alice we decided to get a piece of Perspex cut and have duct taped it in place. We are now heading north to Darwin where we have arranged for the correct size window to be delivered there. Once again the roads are more or less straight and we are honestly just cruising along and singing along to some old favourite songs with no-one but ourselves to hear our very ā€œout of tuneā€ wailing! Tonight we are at a camp by the side of the road with several others and as it is so warm and with no city lights to spoil the sky, we sat outside watching the stars which are ... read more

THE We left Sydney at 6pm on 1st May and flew via Auckland to Rarotonga, capital of the Cook Islands for the penultimate leg of our adventure. We then arrived at 3pm on 1st May...despite completing two flights and a 9 hour stopover at Auckland, we had arrived 3 hours earlier than when we had set off!! We had crosssed the international date line and gone back a day..how crazy is that?! There had been a cock up with the booking when we arrived in Auckland .... we thought we were 'in transit' but it appeared to be two seperate flights instead. So, we had had to briefly enter New Zealand again to collect our luggage and then immediately check in again and go through customs again. This was a real flying visit and the quickest ... read more
