Leaving the vans in Derby, we went camping for 3 nights at Windjana Gorge a pretty Gorge known for its 70 resident freshwater crocs and some aboriginal art we heard about last visit we found after a long very hot walk. What’s another 70K of corrugations to visit Tunnel Creek which is a flowing creek right through a range. Togs and torches are order of the day for that one. Quite beautiful inside and so cool on a hot day. My first flat tire, picking up a nail on the bitumen just 20K from Derby -BUGGAR. After all that rough dirt we had travelled !
From Derby we camped half way to Broome and finally made our destination July 1.Broome has obviously boomed last 5 years with a lot of new subdivisions and resorts everywhere. Caravan parks are full to capacity and those at Cable Beach are charging $44 per night!!People come here for the 3 months of winter yearly; Sandy’s next door neighbours have been coming from Victoria for the last 17 years!!?? Cable Beach was visited by a crocodile last week, they simply hunt them away and on with swimming. Must say it is a beautiful beach the turquoise water says come-on-in. They still allow driving on the sand so it is a pretty free beach , you can drive your vehicle, take your dog and go nude if you so wish. A lot of people of all ages do! We met daily ( with clothes on)for sunset drinks on the sand and watched the floor show Mother Nature provides.
Broome has been a place for R&R, the climate is great, swimming and sunsets to die for and from here it is a long slow ride east. Lot of controversy over a plan to make Broome the new base for the gas fields, a lot of fear it would change Broome forever. Would be a shame.
Thinking we might go to Cairns and then down the coast is the plan just now but as we all know plans can be broken, so we’ll see. Grey-nomads can do what they like!! Because we can!!
