THE LAST DUNEDIN ENTRY FOR AWHILE!
Published: March 22nd 2005Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Otago » DunedinHey there everyone... Well only 9 days until I will be sitting on a plane heading to Thailand! I am started to get excited for the trip although I do admit I am a little nervous about going alone to a place where I don't speak the language at all! It shall be interesting...so this is my last Dunedin post until I return and I've actually done something other than work and surf to tell you about! ***I am going to try and attach some photo's but no guarantee's-this computer is VERY slow to download! Yesterday I went on a tour thru the Catlins which is located on the bottom of the South Island. The Catlins is quite a tourist attraction due to the lush rainforests, beaches and wildlife. I did the tour with a girl ... read more
Kayaking & walking the Abel Tasman
Published: March 21st 2005Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Abel Tasman National ParkAs you could probably understand already, Abel Tasman park is by the sea. So why not look at it also from the sea? So we took a 2-day group tour. In the first day we kayaked. We started paddling to the Tonga island where they have a seal breeding colony, and again we were amazed by the baby seals that simply love performing in front of us. Then we paddled along the beautiful shore, to Musquito bay beach for lunch (Surprisingly, I got biten by a bee there, not just by musquitoes). They provided pretty good lunch, and long time for sun bathing. Ain't life good??? After lunch we continued to paddle and the guide took us into a river that goes to the sea there. It was really nice. It was amazing how the water ... read more
Beautiful Milford Sound
Published: May 14th 2005Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Southland » Milford SoundWe were feeling energised by our very succesful walk and we decided to turn our planned rest days into action. Our next stop was the highly renowned Milford Sound, the only road-accessible fjord in New Zealand's "fjordland". The fact that it's the only road-accessible one might give you an impression how undeveloped New Zealand actually is - and I'm 100% in favour of keeping it that way. It was a long drive from Queenstown around in a huge loop back to and past a place we'd been only a couple of days before during our walk. After 4 hours' driving we passed "The Divide", only about 30kms as the crow flies from where we started our walk - but about 300kms by road! We were entering a place with one of the highest annual rainfalls in ... read more
Quickie - No Photos
Published: March 20th 2005Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington Region » WellingtonHi All, Spent the last week in Wellington, which as I heard, is very similar to San Francisco. It's quite quaint and charming and sits both on the water and in the hillsides. It was great to luxuriate in the hotel with Trisha. We had fun! I didn't take too many pictures there because I spent most of the week in the downtown area. And now, the unthinkable has happened... I left my laptop at a friend's house in Welly while I am on my Kiwi Experience. I feel okay so far. But I've only been gone one day... So, I have commenced my Kiwi Experience trip and am spending my first night in Nelson. I took a bunch of photos sailing into the Marlborough Sounds but since I am on the hostel computer, I am ... read more
Adrenalin capital? Pass us the cake
Published: March 20th 2005Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Otago » QueenstownHellooo!! Tis Rach B here, have been a bit slack about writing these long and winding passgaes, that tell you just how much time we have on our hands now that we're not working!!! Anyhoo, we're back together now, which is cool, because now when we both eat cake and ice cream, we don't feel so guilty. A couple of days after Rach F's red jump suit moment, I too donned the super figure enhancing garb and I think I might have fallen out of the plane actually, not jumped. But that's merely a detail. Unlike Rach, who got to see her fellow passengers fall out of the plane before it was her turn, I got to go first. Lucky me. I do have photos and a dvd (and a t-shirt...yeah I got everything), and will ... read more
On to the North
Published: March 20th 2005Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington Region » WellingtonDearest friends and family, Hello from Napier, Art Deco capital of the world!! I will mercifully spare you accounts of my travel because nothing really uncomfortable has happened yet, and we all know that stories about nasty occurences make for better entertainment. I have, however, left Te Nikau retreat. :-( The weather cleared up beautifully last week and it was how I imagined Hawaii would be like. I should have some awesome pictures in a bit, once the English gal Claire (who hates beetroots, sushi, hummus, spicy stuff, couscous, etc, thus giving merit to the stereotype that Brits -- hi, Roger -- don't like anything remotely exotic and tend to baby their palates with the usual grey-colored cuisine their ancestors have ground into their culture) e-mails me the photos she took with her camera. If ... read more
A market and gardens day in Nelson
Published: March 19th 2005Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Nelson Region » NelsonFinally, an easy day in the city - no hiking, no mud... So it's a perfect sunny day and we go to Nelson. We preplanned it to be on the weekend for the market - I lost my hat and I need to buy a new one! Look in the pictures, didn't I do well? In Nelson we also visited their famous museum - 2 in 1 in fact. It's called the "wearable art" museum, plus a collection of collectible cars. The wearable art is really impressive - works that are only by chance called "clothes" - well, they are worn my manequins, but they are pieces of art. They do not allow camera inside unfortunately so I can't share the sights. The cars were nice, I always like these stuff. In the evening, again with ... read more
Around New Zealand in a Campervan Nobody Wanted
Published: May 25th 2006Oceania » New Zealand » North IslandOur start in New Zealand was a good one. The airport in Auckland is set in a lovely watery location and there are some nice shops awaiting. Then when you get through customs there is a stand offering free coffee and tea (Denise was overjoyed!). Funny how first impressions count. We headed straight for the campervan rental office in the airport with a view to hiring a van for a week or so. Unfortunately all the vans were already hired out "but there is one", the attendant said "but we don´t normally hire it out!" This appealed to Denise´s maternal instincts so we said we would take it! We couldn't pick it up until the next day so we booked ourselves in to a Best Western Hotel nearby. Just before the sun set I (Gerry) went ... read more
Baby seals are sooooo cute (more than penguins? maybe)
Published: March 18th 2005Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Nelson RegionFriday, we drove up to the north edge of the south island. Again we followed the advice of that woman from the info in Takaka, and we went to Wharariki beach in low tide. She said that the baby seals are playing in the pools that are left when the sea goes back. And this time she had no mistake. We went down to the beach and there they were - little seal babies playing like kids love to play. They were swimming and doing "flip flops" just like the Dusky dolphins we saw in Kaikura. We watched them for maybe 30 minutes as they were so amazing. Still in Wharariki beach, there are beautiful rock formations, little rocky islets close to the shore with holes in them - wait for the pictures. In fact, Erez ... read more
