Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

As I had no "date" to take to my work ball, I decided to take Amy. And this was so much fun as we got our hair and make up done and drunk Bacardi cocktails whilst getting ready. Kate who works at the Elizabeth Arden counter at Smith & McCaugneys in the city is a legend and responsible for our gorgeous make up. We headed off to a friends Penthouse and he took some photos for us before we made it to the Convention Centre in the Sky City and were met by the likes of Austin Powers and other celebrities. Local pottery

Before I got to New Zealand the plan was to get a job at the Hardware café but Neil and Paula mentioned Toby Restaurant around the corner that I hadn’t seen last time I was here. Handed my CV to both and the Hardware had enough staff but Tobys had just opened again after being closed down for serving minors!! Went for a trial there and met the staff and a few locals then got called into to talk about shifts with Jeanette (the owner). Supposed to start the week after but she rang me the next day to ask if [View Full Entry]

Tawharanui Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland
Went to tawharanui with my family for a weekend away at the neighbours bach (holiday home). Sat out on the deck having dinner then played tennis but it was too hot. Went to Omaha beach for a surf then set off for Goat Island, a marine reserve where you can go diving, snorkelling or on the glass bottom boat. Looked really choppy from the carpark so as we had all been there before we left. Me Neil and Joe went off for another surf and played rugby on the beach then met the others back at the house for a BBQ. [View Full Entry]

About 10 minutes walk away from the house is Titirangi village. It has the usual supermarket, dairy, chemist library etc. The Hardware café is a popular place throughout the day and night and also Tobys Restaurant where I worked behind the bar. I went to the village during the day to get some lunch or have a drink at the hardware, occasionally at night to have a few beers with Neil and his mate Peej and obviously go to work or have a drink at Tobys. To be honest, I did not know New Zealand was composed of two islands before I went. Yeah I know, I am pretty ignorant. Anyways, so our travel iteniary is pretty much the following. Fly into Auckland, which is the biggest city in the North Island, and then take another flight down to the southern tip of the North Island and take the ferry into the South Island. Rent the car at the South Island and make a loop around. After that, return to the north, rent another car, and start making our way back to Auckland airport again. Because the [View Full Entry]
