Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

So, I am back from the "ski" trip. I put that word in quotes only because it was meant to be a ski trip, but did not really turn out that way. Let's see, where to start... First off, Shelby lost her passport, so she had to leave a day early and go back up north to Auckland which is where the U.S. passport services is to get a new one. Now, why is it in Auckland when Wellington is the capital and where the Embassy/Consulate are located? We could never figure this out. We all get to Christchurch finally and [View Full Entry]

What a great trip it has been so far! I'm done with the North Island of New Zealand. I certainly haven't seen it all but what i have been able to see has been amazing. Right now i am sitting looking at this gorgeous mountain at the base of another of Mt. Ruaperio, an active volcano that last erupted in 1997. the mountain i am looking at is Mt. Ngauruhoe which was Mt. Doom in Lord of the Rings. It is truly beautiful. New Zealand is a wondrous country filled with so many different landscapes. It is very mountainous and hilly [View Full Entry]

Left Nelson and on the way to West Port we stopped for a short walk beside the edge of Lake Rotoriti (I think!) Moving swiftly on we stopped near to the Buller River and this afternoon have been on a jet boat that can reach speeds of 65mph and pass 400litres of water out a second! Was really nice, as views were good and there was a slight adrenaline rush created by the occassional twist and turn of the boat. Tomorrow we move on to Mahinapuia (sp?) and the 'Poo Pub' [View Full Entry]

Maori Schoolreisje! Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua
Dag lieve mensen!

Had a really great evening at the top of Queenstown Gondola for the Kiwi Haka, although the food was a little crappy with no sign of the Maori dishes that were meant to be on offer. The experience was great - particularly as all and I mean ALL the men had to get up on stage and learn and perform the new All Blacks Haka!!! HAHAHAHAHA [View Full Entry]

Pseudo goodbyes... First entry may as well be something interesting... even if it is not strictly travel related! Finally finished Les Miserables after about 6 months or so. It will be a little bit strange at first I think, but more than anything, I have been putting things off until "after I finish the show..." and that time has now come, so I really need to get everything under control. But also on a positive-ish note I got to practise saying goodbye to people that have been quite a big part of my life for a little while. Not that this [View Full Entry]

Grabbed the Ferry this morning having decided to spend time in Wellington on the way back. Not much to shout about in Picton, and we moved on to Nelson quite quickly. Didn't do too much today either, having a slightly more relaxing time, though did take a walk around Nelson main streets etc. Then finished up with a game of football. And a by the way on football, I'm actually travelling with another Norwich fan called James who lives in Thorpe and plays football at the Power League! "It's a small world after all!" Woke up this morning to Kea's (huge, cheeky parrot like things) shouting their heads off on top of someones campervan - although thankfully not ours! Headed off this morning to catch our boat for the cruise, which was awesome, although the day was very misty and not as clear as we'd have liked. Observatory was really cool and lots of really nice fish and coral to gawp at! Decided to head back to Te Anau as the lack of civilisation and the thought of spending another night in LOG country was a little daunting :o) Off to Queenstown tomorrow to watch [View Full Entry]

Milford Sound
The Dreaded Kea

Seems so long ago that I'm trying to catch up and it's only a couple of days!! If I remember what happened on the way to Wellington I'll add it later, but having arrived in Wellington we took a trip up the cable car to the botanical gardens overlooking the city. Then for the evening we started downstairs in the Base Backpackers bar, us girlies were lucky enough to receive vouchers for free bubbly!! Then took a tour round town and visted an expensive (grrr!) Irish Bar. Early start for Ferry tomorrow morning. [View Full Entry]
