4 Days in the South Island of New Zealand, Part II: New Zealand Photography: Photos 63 to 84

Waking up in Fox Village, I knew I had no reservations but two activities in mind. #1, to see the Franz Josef Glacier in all its glory, and #2 to see the Fox Glacier in all its glory! I had planned to take a strenuous hike up the side of the Franz Josef glacial valley to an overlook but he trail was closed from a recent rock fall leaving me stuck without set plans. Fortunately Franz Josef village was filled with tour agencies, so after some sleuthing I said "to hell with it" and signed up for a Helicopter Hiking tour of the glacier!
It was about $150 US, and to me this seemed steep for a 5 hour tour. But I considered the fact that I might possibly never be here again and charged it. Buy now, pay later! This uniquely American invention was paying dividends here on the other side of the earth. I had 2.5 hours before the helicopter took off, so I sped my way to the trail head for the Franz Josef Glacier face hike. Everyone does this hike, a flat walk to the face of the glacier. Your pictures are absolutely beautiful. I especiall like "Fox Glacier Hike" and the sheep one (-: That's one thing I remember about are time in NZ when we were kids- the amazing colors in the sulfer ponds etc.... I soooooooo wish I were better with a camera. I'm getting ready to move to France in Sept. and would love to capture and share moments with friends and family here. Oh well, there's always hope I guess. Take care,

July 28th 2008 - Matthew Stewart: Would like to talk to you....
You pictures are great. You remind me of me, in that it sounds like you make frequent stops when you see a photographic moment - my wife used to get frustrated with me as I make frequent U-turns because "I saw something" but now she loves taking photos and doesn't mind. Anyway we are going to NZ Oct.27th-31st then on to Australia from Oct. 31-Nov. 12th. We live in Sacramento CA and it sounds like you are from the area as well (Yosemite, etc.) We have a short time frame on the southern island and I figured you could give us some great advice. We don't like doing paid tours for days on end, would rather have the experience doing a trip ourselves, but we are very open to day tours like the helicopter one, etc. What would you recommend. We want to rent a car and drive the southern island. My phone is 916-788-8828. Take care and God bless.

Because the west to east weather pattern forces the storms over the Southern Alps, a rain shadow exists on the eastern side- much like California/Nevada and Chile/Argentina.

I signed up for an all day rappeling and waterfalling expedition- a 7 hour canyoning tour called \"The Big Nige\"!

We hiked 1000 feet up many switchbacks to an inlet of the Nige River. It cuts a deep gorge through the glacial walls! Water was freezing!

Jumping in the pools was not only the best relief for the hot wetsuit- it was good old fashioned fun.

With the pine trees, lakes and dry hills from California so familiar to me already, New Zealand didn't seem so far away.
