Hi Guys hope you are enjoying the blogs and you are all keeping well.
So we set of early from Franz josef on what was to be probably one of the longest detours in history! With the bridge still not repaired we would have to drive all the way back to lake Wanaka and then head back across the south island to Christchurch! We decided along the way that we would stop for the night in a town called Timaru which is about 100km from Christchurch. The journey here was very long and expensive as it used up more than a full tank of fuel in the van. But we did manage to have beautiful weather along the way which gave us some amazing views of Mt Cook and lake Pukaki. We got checked into a camp site for the night another top ten holiday park. There always pretty reliable good clean well equipped camp sites. By the time we got checked in it was pretty late so we were unable to find somewhere to eat. We ended up getting a dominos pizza and for only $5 it was a bargain.
The following the day the weather was pretty
bad so we just did some shopping and then had a walk around town looking at the different things going on for the festival.
We set of for hamner springs early the next morning another long drive and more petrol. The weather was good so it makes the drive all the more easy. Again we had some lovely views for the drive along the coast and then the mountains as we headed into hamner. The whole town is popular just for the hot springs that have been here for years. So we got checked into another lovely camp site and headed off to spend the evening in the hot pools. We have been in so many hot pools since arriving in New Zealand but there a great way to relax. One pool we didn't appreciate was the sulphur pool, why would anyone want to sit in a pool that smells like rotten eggs!!
We set off again early the next morning to head to picton where we are to get the ferry across the cook straits to Wellington. We stopped of on the way for some nice lunch in kiakoura were there is whale and dolphin trips to
do. We had a nice lunch by the beach and had a short walk around the town before heading onto Blenheim.
Blenheim is a big enough town not far from Picton and it was here that we were able to get a new battery for Ian's iPhone which had completely died a few weeks before. We headed on to Picton and got checked into our holiday park for the night. We got to see loads of stingrays in the small harbour in town it was crazy seeing them in a harbour but apparently there always there. Ian made an amazing but beef stir fry that night. He spent ages simmering the beef to make it tender for Laura and wat do you know she didn't like it haha! It was an early night as we were up at 6am to catch our boat to Wellington.
Lots of love Laura and Ian
