Lake Te AnauView of Lake Te Anau from the hike along the lake. We hiked from the town of Te Anau to the Control Gates, or the spot where we officially started the Kepler Track.
After the Doubtful Sound cruise I met up with a couple more friends to do the Kepler Track. The Kepler Track is a 3-4 day hike near Te Anau. The Kepler Track is also one the New Zealand's "Great Walks". New Zealand has classified 9 of its most popular trails as Great Walks. The trails are well maintained and people stay in group huts to minimize the overall impact to the environment. The huts also allow the hikes to be accessable to more people since you do not have to have your own tent or stove. You only need your own sleeping bag, clothes, food and cooking pots. The hike was nice as the trail made it's way above treeline for nice views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The group I was with made the trip as well as it is good to spend time on the trail and in the huts with friends. I am glad that I made it to one of the Great Walks as I had hoped that I could make time for a backpacking trip in New Zealand.

View along the Kepler TrackWe were rewarded with nice views after we got above treeline. The climb to this location was about 1000 meters in a relatively short distance.
