We took a bike ride around much of the edge of lake Wakatipu (lake at Queenstown). Very pleasant weather and once again Jana did great. Although it was sore bum cheeks at the end.... read more

Day 23: Wanaka to Queenstown, 95km. The Donkey conquers the Crown Range The next morning the donkey woke up very early in quite a state. He had looked at the weather forecast the evening before and although the weather forecast for day 23 from Wanaka to Queenstown was still favourable it was going to turn to custard, or shit, the day after. The donkey preferred custard over shit, he liked custard but he had learned that as the weather was concerned it was all the same. On that day, day 24, the Donkey had to tackle one of the more difficult routes of the Tour, 103km of gravel roads and bike trails, between Walter Peak Station and Mossburn, with the 600m high Von Hill smack bang in the middle. To get from Queenstown to Walter Peak ... read more

Neither Mike nor I had activities planned for the morning so we had a much needed sleep in. Dave on the other hand just HAD to get up and have some amazing life experiences on the glacier. We’ve learned that like most in their late teens, he’s not much of morning person. “Good morning Dave!” we’d say. “Mrrhrrhrrhrr” Dave would reply, sounding like Sideshow Bob after stepping on a rake. While he was up on the glacier, I finished writing my last entry on the pub balcony. Mike and I were then joined by Helen, Georgie, Izzy, and Lara for morning coffee and a walk down the glow worm path. The safety conga line was not necessary this time; it was a perfect day outside. The sky was completely clear and the mountain air was warm ... read more

Today we leave Queenstown and more importantly...........we leave New Zealand!! We have truly loved this country, its people and its way of life. Obviously, we have only seen this with a tourist's eye, obscuring the underlying problems and issues that all countries have, but even so, I can definitely see what attracts people to emigrate here. Having said this, it is a very long way from home and everything else that is going on in the world almost seems to be happening on a different planet......which, if the truth be known, is probably no bad thing! But, home (as they say) is where the heart is, so as good as NZ is, sorry folks, we'll be staying put in the UK peeps. I've been thinking very hard about a title for this Episode of the Blog, ... read more

Today was another early start, with a 7.30 taxi pick up to go to Christchurch station and catch our first train of the holiday, the excitingly named Tranzalpine Express for a coast to coast journey across the South Island. So, in the words of Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas in the 1965 hit (written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David), today we will be completing the 'full set of transport' on this trip; today we will have done.........Trains and Boats and Planes!. The Tranzalpine Express runs from Christchurch on the east coast to the small town of Greymouth on the west coast, a total of 139 miles across the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps (including the alpine earthquake fault line) and said to be one of the epic train journeys of the world. We ... read more

My very last day Yes that does mean that I have lost 3 days of blogging and I plan to do these on my return to the UK Catch-up style. I tried to upload my Christchurch day 4x and lost it all 4x due to internet connections not working so I am afraid I will have to come back to that - And I need to come back to Akaroa and the swimming in the ocean with dolphins and the giants house - And our trip in torrential rain through Arthurs Pass (and possibly the most beautiful valley ever - if only we could have seen it through the cloud and the rain) and onto Franz Joseph and the glassier. So at least 3 more blogs after this one - you lucky lucky people. Currently I ... read more

Arse first that is how not to bungy jump !!! So technically does that mean I didn't jump? First video is me after the jump (sorry for the language but please remember I am scared of heights and just voluntarily jumped off a really high bridge). The sentiment of Happy New Year (your time) still stands. Second video is me jumping - (well to be honest failing to jump and then jumping like a one legged rabbit with no sense of direction). It is probably worth laughing at me in the first few minutes as the most graceless jumper you have ever seen, and then hold on till the end, my face in the boat as they take me away priceless. Having said that I have done it - go me - there were no other ... read more

But then I got up and Holly was sad and looked at me with such expectation and love - awww - so I binned my plans and walked with her to Arrow Town for a coffee - Arrow Town is a very long way away and I ache and I had to walk back as the busses here do not let dogs on them !!! So that was a 26K walk OMG how will I ever do 100K in June? I slept 12 hours last night after our little walk and I may well sleep well tonight. Although I am going to have to talk to ... read more
