We had heard that Queenstown was the 'party capital' of the South Island, so we weren't quite sure what to expect, but whatever picture I had in my mind, I was completely mistaken. The beautiful lake surrounded by towering mountains is a perfect setting for this small little city, and on first sighting it is hard to imagine anything other than quiet walks and peaceful boat trips taking place in the picturesque community. In the four days we have spent here, we have managed to fit in a trip to Milford Sound, a winery visit, a canyon swing (sorry mum) and a gondola ride to gorgeous views over the town.
Milford Sound was beautiful, and we were lucky enough to visit on a glorious sunny day (apparently very rare). The 8-hour round coach trip was a bit of a slog, but the beautiful scenery for the entire way made it a lot more bearable. On the boat ride through the sound we saw some dolphins showing off by the boat, some seals lazing about on the rocks, and our boat driver thought it would be amusing to drive straight into a waterfall. It was quite funny, but I'd imagine it would be less so on a cold and rainy day.
The winery visit was a lot of fun, and very informative - perhaps Becky and I will now make more educated wine choices than 'whatever's cheapest'...perhaps not. The canyon swing was also a lot of fun, and Becky hobbled along behind me to support me as I threw myself off a cliff (foot injury). I jumped off twice, although the second was more of a backwards slip and very embarrassing - I am sure the DVD will be a source of entertainment for you all when we get home.
Now we must dash off on the 'atomic shuttle' although I fear this sounds more exciting than it actually is - a 4 hour bus ride to our next destination. Photos to follow when I locate an unbroken computer...
