After the commercialism of the Queenstown area, the Goldfields of Central Otago were next on the agenda. The towns were a mix of fine old buildings and deriliction and decay or in the case of Cromwell, underwater due to the dam built at Clyde. We followed the old Central Otago railway line (now a cycle route) and had an overnight in the former provincial capital of Naseby - things have changed somewhat since the good old days of the goldrush in 1863 and the fulltime population now struggles to a 100. The town's motor camp was proof that the spirit of Butlin's wooden chalets is still alive and kicking in the southern hemisphere. Even after participating, I can hardly find words to describe this gala. I never caught sight of pudding, or racing of any kind come to think of it, so I can only conclude that the name was created to honour the spirit of absurdity that prevailed over the event. The most articulate explanation, although far from succinct, came from a chap named Murray: Well you see, we're actually all split personalities here in Oamaru... Sometimes we compose a regiment of Alf's Imperial Army. The whole idea is that if you can have belligerent pacifists, well then you can have a pacifist army. I've been promoted to lance corporal. Some of you may be aware of my growing reputation as an online dating guru. For those of you who aren't, I am not accruing a prodigious portfolio of virtual lovers... rather, I have mastered the art of writing online profiles for others! As a sidenote on my travels from Timaru, some of you will recall the kind farmer who rescued me from a late night by the roadside, and restored my faith in humanity by inviting me into his home for the night; he asked no work in return, just bid me happy travels.
