Char woke up on the farm for her first sunny birthday ever. We packed up the van, took one last dip in the creek and got on our way. We headed for Anatoki Salmon which is a company/ restaurant where you can fish for your own salmon. They will then smoke it or sushi it for you to eat in their restaurant - fancy eh! Well that’s what we thought too but it turned out to be a bit of a kiddies gimmick so we headed onwards in search of something better. We visited a few tourist sites along the way the first of which was Waikoropupu Springs. We had been told they were crystal clear turquoise lakes which was funny because they all referred to them as PuPu Springs! Anyway, they were absolutely the clearest ... read more

We stuck at it in the vineyards until the 2nd week but had heard from other travellers that there were better jobs to be found. Plus we wanted to find somewhere where we could park and live on site rather than travelling around different sites using all of our fuel. So off to the library we went to scope out some more options. By midday the following day we had offers from a hop farm and a dairy farm. The hop farm won our allegiance though as we could stay on site (plus the option of free beer) so off we trotted to Motueka. We arrived later than evening to meet our new self proclaimed dickhead boss. His name was Kem and began telling us his story of how he used to grow Blackcurrents to Ribena ... read more

" The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." Saint Augustine Tuesday 7th March 2017. Preparation is the name of the game when one travels and our research indicated we needed at least 30 minutes from Pororua to the Ferry in Auckland because of traffic congestion. So, we fired up the HBS and pointed towards the harbor arriving about 12 minutes later. What was the fuss all about? Having checked in we had time to wait as the inbound ferry, the “Strait Feronia” arrived and disgorged a huge number of large trucks and cars. This Italian built ferry (any reason to worry?) can carry up to 150 vehicles of all shapes and sizes and 400 passengers. So, it’s big and stable which relaxed Sue considerably. Sitting in the dark ... read more

#1 Be part of the family For four weeks, I lived and worked at Mountian Apple Farm as a WWOOFer. WOOFing or World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms, is a network where individuals volunteer 4-6 hours a day in exchange for learning about organic farming while being provided room and board). My hosts, Barbara and Rob, were so welcoming. They opened their lives to me and made feel at home. I became fully immersed in their lifestyle: helping make dinner and cleaning up afterward. After working in the gardens and orchards, we spent the nights watching Kiwi movies in the living room and went to their Tuesday night yoga class. On Thursday, Rob took me to an open mic night at the Park Cafe and we both performed and danced, and other nights we played music ... read more

Slow start given none of us could get to sleep last night - minds too busy. Bobby is still in bed but I spend a couple more hours with Shelley over breakfast - the subject hasn't changed. I pack up and head out a bit after ten, already a bit sad to leave these two behind. Three hour (hot, drenched) hike out and then the long drive to Motueka. Find my motel, wash everything, re-supply with tramping foods, and then out for a meal with Lance. I might pop back there for breakfast and see if he's still around - I quite like his company. Tomorrow brings a drive out to Flora road-end, a hike into the Leslie valley to Salisbury Lodge, then a day up and over the summit of Mt Arthur to Arthur hut, ... read more

Dear all, It's Sunday evening. We are sat in the van having taken a stroll into town, stocked up on beer and eaten chips from the local chippy. We are here in Motueka, almost at Abel Tasman national park. After I wrote on Friday we decided to head into the town for the evening. We went and sampled local steaks and pies and then stumbled on an Irish bar called The Strawberry Tree. It was a great place and it was jam night so we heard some pretty cool live music. It was obviously the place to go for locals and there was plenty of local sagas going on with the two local ladies and the three men who all looked the same!! Great people watching. Since I last wrote we said goodbye to Kaikoura and ... read more

Arrived in Nelson after a flight from Queenstown to Christchurch then a flight from Christchurch to Nelson. there was only a twenty minute gap between flights so it meant a quick sprint from one gate to another, pretty tight I have to say. Picked up a car in Nelson and just drove for about half an hour to a little place called Ruby Bay. It was beautiful, there was a restaurant called the boatshed right on the entrance to the river, it was a really still evening the sea was like a mill pond and a bit misty. Across the river were some pine trees and beyond that a creek with a few boats. I ordered belly of pork, followed by a lemon posset which was superb washed down with a couple of glasses of cider, ... read more

HI everybody My excuses for the delayed blog, I guess no news is good news? Last time I wrote about my time in Wellington. At that time I was staying at the community of Rainbow valley in Takaka. That was about 2 months ago. Now I'm in Motueka, not far from where I was 2 months ago, maybe things have not changed that much, therefore there was not much to write about? As many of you have read on facebook, I've been wwooffing my way around the Golden bay, only to stick around for the Luminate festival. Something I was looking forward to even before I set foot on kiwiground. Things have changed, I have changed, but mostely my plane ticket has changed. I was suppose to fly back to The Netherlands the 26th of January ... read more
