I decided to stay another night here. I am here on vacation and I feel like the whole time I've been rushing around. It's only day 6 and I have almost hit all the places I wanted to. After Lake Tekapo I am going to head to Mt. Cook Village and spent a night or two there, then down to Queenstown and Te Anu. There is supposed to be some really good horse back riding trails at a place called Dart Stables near Queenstown that I am excited for. If I finish Queenstown and Te Anu early I may go to a few other places. Currently I am catching up on my journal while watching the sun rise over the mountains and lake. The view from this hostel is spectacular. My butt is so sore today ... read more

For those living in caves who might not have heard yet, Britain has a new Primeminster - David Cameron. Now I don’t want to get into politics - anyone who knows John can probably imagine the rantings and ravings that could be heard emanating from our van over the past few days! For my part, I’m just so grateful that the uncertainty has been cleared and the exchange rate has finally become a bit more acceptable for us poor travellers overseas! However, I would wish “Call Me Dave”, his new best friend, Nick, and all their Cabinet the very best of British with any attempt to sort out the economy! Aha! We thought this morning when we peeked out of our windows at the glorious view of Lake Pukaki and the cloud topped mountains, ‘so that’s ... read more

I headed out for Lake Tekapo some time in the morning. I was sad to leave since the hospitality at the Big Tree lodge was so amazing. Lee said "Sad to see you go mate" in his thick NZ accent. I forgot to take a picture of the lodge, I also forgot my 12 bottles of beer I had bought. Lee called me about 10 minutes out to tell me I left the beer, I told him it was all his. The ride towards Lake Tekapo was very scenic. Gigantic mountains behind rolling green hills with sheep and cows oblivious to the scenery. I stopped quite often to take pictures. I am almost tempted to not even take pictures anymore. You just can't capture the full effect of actually being here. To stand up and just ... read more

Given the choice between no more chocolate or World Peace, I would dither. I am not proud and in fact I am thoroughly ashamed, but hey its chocolate and I am an addict. This week was perfect with two major opportunities for over-indulgence on chocolate and a whole bunch of “wow” moments with incredible scenery. Talking of addicts, Queenstown is called the adrenaline junkies capital and I think its my favourite town so far in New Zealand. Not because I was up for any of the death-defying treats on offer but because it seemed to have all of the elements you look for in a nice place to spend time. It has a fabulous setting surrounded by picturesque mountains including the towering Remarkables, is next to the large deep blue Lake Wakatipu, has a compact but ... read more

Two superlative days, but tiring. We drove south from Blenheim under clearing skies, stopping at the Seal Colony and Kaikoura, where the mountain views were immaculately superb. The countryside, surprisingly for me, was covered in dried grassland, apart from where fields were being watered for cows or sheep to graze. After Kaikoura, we diverted inland on a lonely road to Waiau, where we had tea/beer in an English country garden surrounded by mombretias(?), dahlias and petunias. (The South Island vegetation is less exotic than North Island's). Mary wanted to buy the hotel attached to the garden. Eventually, after a long sunny drive south, we reached Christchurch, and our hotel in Cathedral Square. We looked like country bumpkins entering a posh hotel in tee shirts and shorts! But we brazened it out and went off to enjoy ... read more

Hi! I am now in Lake Tekapo having travelled from the West Coast down towards the southern tip of the Island and back towards the East Coast. I have stayed at the most beautiful lakes, each very different to all spectacular, although I am not sure I have done them justice in my photographs, varying in colour from sparkling blue to an unusual aqua marine green. It is hard to explain just how stunning this country is, as I have said before its like all the best bits of the UK but times by 10 and then even bigger and more dramatic. I need to watch the Lord of the Rings again when I get home!! The weather has been fantastic, warm and sunny without being humid. I have had a chill out time the last ... read more

Today we took a road trip to Lake Tekapo, just south of Christchurch. The total ride was about 3 hours and when we arrived the Lake was breathtaking!! We couldn't believe how blue the water was. The amazing turquoise-blue color of the Lake is created by "rock flour", which the glaciers in the headwaters grind to make a fine dust. The fine dust particles in combination with the sunlight create this unique color. As you can see from the pictures, the Lake is a gem. Some of the pics were taking when it was cloudy and some sunny. You will notice the differences in water color. One of our stops in Lake Tekapo was the Mt. John Observatory which is known as the best place in the Southern Hemisphere for astronomical views! We drove up to ... read more

October, 31 - Nov 2 Don't be alarmed by the title of this entry. We aren't depressed - no work, lie-ins, amazing experiences - we have no reason to be blue. Unlike Lake Tekapo. The lake is fed by glacial melt waters that contain finely ground rock particles which give it the most amazing colours - something to do with refraction of the light. The lake contains the bluest water we have ever seen that seems to change hue depending on the light. It looks almost opaque, like water in a jar that is used to rinse brushes coated in blue paint. The journey to Tekapo was quite eventful as our bus had a bit of a breakdown. Thankfully this happened at a rest stop and not on the road in the middle of nowhere with ... read more
