These photos are along the way from Mt. Cook to Cromwell. Cromwell was a nice little town on a lake where we stayed the first night. You can tell by the pictures that the terrain changed with almost every turn. We saw beautiful green hills, almost desert-like mountains and everything in between. It was impressive. The last picture of Rob in the rock shelter was taken closer to Dunedin on a hike around a lake.... read more

Saturday 16th September 2006 We left Te Anau and headed down to Invercargill. We stopped off at Bluff, and had some sea food (Bluff is famous for it) in the Drunken Sailor restaurant over looking the sea. We had Oysters, Scallops and Blue Cod - all really nice. Sure my Dad would have loved it! We were hoping to make it over to Stewart Island, but it was too rough and wouldn’t have been very nice when we got there. So Stewart Island eluded me for a second time. Instead we left Invercargill (not a very nice place) to drive along the coast of the Catlins. Well we tried to leave, we managed getting lost and ending back where we started - it took over two hours to leave Invercargill! Can imagine my Dad’s knowing nods ... read more

Sunday 27th August 2006 I overslept - I had ear plugs because of a snorer and missed my alarm. I awoke at 8am - the time we were due to leave and there was no way I was going to be stranded another day in Invercargill! I don't know how I managed it, but I made it onto the bus! On our route to Dunedin we went via the Catlins, stopping at Curio Bay (good for dolphin spotting in the Summer), see the video here. Also we stopped at a beach with some 150 million old fossilized trees - you could see the details of the bark and twigs, etc. We also stopped for a walk around a lake. On the way back out of the Catlins we hoped to see an 'crazy inventors gallery' - ... read more

Dunedin is meant to be more Scottish than Scotland, but seeing as I've never been to Scotland (yet..that is the next place I want to travel to!) I really could not tell! The first day in this bustling student city I drove to the world's steepest street (go and look it up in the Guinness Book of Records) which is called Baldwin street. I decided to just go for it and drive up it, and the little beast made it...although I had to go down to first gear and boy was she a-roaring! Ian was really scared but I just found it fun, especially going down when Ian walked and I had some fun going down slowly at first then fully releasing the break towards the end...ahaha I wouldn't like to live at the houses at ... read more

Hi folks, This is a quick test email for a couple of new additions to my subscribers list. Well Dad is here at home with me right now (Thursday 6.20 pm) and we are both trying to just chill with a nice glass of, surprise surprise, Sav Blanc wine. Tea is busy cooking away downstairs as I write this and yes Allison, I am sure to burn it.........LOL. Nope, only joking! Yes seriously Allison, only joking. You will be amazed with what I can cook now (comes from dating two chefs and watching intently what they did) And not Burn! Anyway, today has been weird and I have felt weird. I reckon it is just nervous excitement........ Bailey definitly knows something is up! Gee I will miss him heaps. Suzanne, I am looking forward to Croatia ... read more

After one night in Balcutha we set off in the morning to Dunedin. Having taken the decision to keep following the coast we again departed from the main road and ventured along unsealed roads. After a short while we had climbed up a bit and came across snow covered roads. It really didn’t look that deep though and there were plenty of other tires tracks so we proceeded with caution. We reached the top of a hill with a pile of snow covered logs in a field on my side, the next thing I know is that we are sliding fairly fast towards the hedge on my side of the road! Thommo had hit the breaks slightly which had just sent us skidding on the snow into the side. Fortunately there was no damage at all ... read more

Hello. Our last days in Queenstown found us travelling up to one of the town's highest points on a gondola (cable car). Unfortunately the weather had turned cold, wet and windy again so the views weren't as good as they might have been. A nice adventure nevertheless. We also had a walk around the town and the lovely lakeside. On our last night we had a nice meal in the hotel before getting to bed at a reasonable hour before our early departure to Dunedin on the Thursday. As before the bus trip was terrific passing through some outstanding scenery: snow capped mountains, lakes - natural and man made - desolate mountainsides, small towns with Scottish street names. All accompanied by a bright and jolly bus driver's commentary and some awful jokes. We arrived in Dunedin ... read more

The day I thought would never get here has arrived and is now half way through. Yip it's my last day at work. I have survived the regulation morning tea and speeches. To my huge surprise and delight the CEO wrote a going away poem for me. I even managed to give a half decent speech (so I was told later), despite the fact my knees felt like they were knocking together (for those that don't know, speaking to groups of people scares me senseless). This time next week I will be on the plane to CHCH then off on my big adventure. Hopefully I won't be jet lagged when I finally get to Gothenburg and will be able to post a travel log from my brother's place before we head off into the wilds of ... read more

Entry by Ryan: Wednesday July 11th, Its seems today we did nothing but drive, after waking up and packing the car we drove out of Invercargil to the Catlins conservation park on our quest to find penguins. As always we drove through plenty of beautiful scenery along the coast and arrived at our destination. For once we arrived at our destination to coincide with the proper tides, this time to see a petrified Jurassic forest. Walking along the rocks on top of the petrified forest was cool, but what we had really wanted to see was penguins, there were also frequently dolphins is the bay but we were not as excited to see those. Unfortunately we were not lucky at this beach with any wildlife, except the usual seagulls. So we decided to continue our search ... read more
