Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

New Zealand Location

NZ Day 9 We thought we were doing the main tourist route but we found ourselves quite out of the way of the typical tourists Our first stop was at the oldest wooden lighthouse. It was a beautiful sight and view of the ocean but we were a little disappointed that we didn’t see any seals or sea lions dolphins or penguins, which the guidebook said we might see. Our next stop was the infamous Slope Point. The southern most place on the south island of NZ. The description in the guidebook made us think that this was a very [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Entrance to the fantastic cathedral cave, a huge horse shoe cave carved out from the sea.
Cathedral Caves First stop was Cathedral Caves and we arrived right on time for low tide! We walked through the rainforest bush which spiralled down to the beach and then clambered over the rocks to explore the caves, as even at low tide, waves were washing into both cave entrances. The caves were joined at the back and were very pretty, with purple colouration in the rocks. We staggered back up the winding path to the car park, feeling quite invigorated from a bit of morning exercise! McClean Falls The exercise didn't end at Cathedral Caves, as we had a shorter [View Full Entry]

Catlins National Park - From Invercargill we travelled to Dunedin via the southern scenic route, through Catlins national park. On the way we stopped at Nugget point to see pinguins, at a fossile forest, at the most southern part of NZ and we spotted dolphins, yellow eyed pinguins and sea lions. We brachten de nacht door in Invercargill, zodat we daar de volgende ochtend konden starten met de southern scenic route. Eerst even uitslapen en wasjes draaien. De southern scenic route gaat via een kronkelweg langs de kust en je kunt onderweg allerlei dingen bekijken. wij zijn gest [View Full Entry]

After a great night's rest, we took of this morning with a stiff wind blowing (the ominous southerly is blowing up from Antarctica) and we are headed for a day of wildlife viewing, lot's of stops for little hikes and the South of the South: 4800 km from the South Pole!!! We first travelled through the Catlins, which is an area known for it's ridges of native bush forest, beautiful beaches and rugged coastline. There are sheep everywhere!!! (more on that later). We stop at Nugget Point to walk up the lighthouse and watch the seals play in the water and [View Full Entry]

Stayed in Curio Bay and tried to find some rare Yellow Eyed Penguins. None. Drove to Kaka Point for a stroll along the beach and in the surf. Very nice area. Very remote too... [View Full Entry]

Hiking in Te Anau
Today was the last day in Te Anau. Our see-kayaking trip was canceled by the kayak company so we made the best of it by taking a hike along a river. The trail we were on was used for a scene in the Lord of the Rings. There was a carpet of green vegetation on everything -the ground, the trees, the rocks. It seemed like a good place for a hobbit anyway. The hike ended at a small lake. In the afternoon we drove to Queenstown to start the adventure portion of the trip. Queenstown is on a beautiful lake and [View Full Entry]
