Mar. 15 Wanaka Nelson has a competitor for my favorite NZ community. Wanaka has it all: a beautiful blue mountain lake, hiking trails, friendly community, decent shopping, restaurants, and an overall peaceful attractiveness to it. We spent our first day here doing a lot of walking. We headed out of town about 2km where we started up to the view point on Iron Mountain. This hill is about 260 m high and took a good 40 minutes to climbed to the top. But the views made it all worth while. We had a 360 degree view of Wanaka and the surrounding areas. Lakes, mountains, rivers, and fields. We then headed down the hill on a much steeper incline that took us down the hill to a place called Puzzle World. Now Puzzle World totally lived up ... read more

March 12 Greymouth Last night was the big earthquake in Japan and New Zealand was under tsunami alert. We took a look at the map and Nelson, which is a coastal city, was potentially in its path. Kind of eerie, especially since there was no information from anyone as to what was happening, or what to do in case of. We followed things on the news, and decided on a plan of action for ourselves, should anything happen. We then went to bed, woke up around 4am and checked the news again. All was well. Guess a wave of a about a foot hit the northern beach where we had done the beach bus trip. Our trip to Greymouth was a long day, hitting the road at 8am. It was uneventful until we stopped for ... read more

Forgot to mention on previous entry, a clear sky here at night here is nothing short of breathtaking. The stars appear so much closer and clearer and you can actually see other galaxies with what appears to be gases around them. Onto today and we woke up to a cold grey start and ducks spuddling outside the van. One thing we’ve noticed while over here is how many old caravans are still functioning. How different to the UK where there is this obsession with having the latest model with all the gizmos. Our travels to day took us off the main highway (although these are still very quiet roads compared to the UK) and onto a pretty road between Kurow and Oamaru taking in Elephant Rocks (huge rocks formed in the sea between 26 and 30 ... read more

Geo: -44.6987, 169.133Where do I start this blog? First of all apologies for not posting anything recently. As we moved to South Island we soon realised that wifi was difficult to access and expensive when it is available. We arrived in Wellington on the Sunday evening, 20th February and ran into difficulty. We have come to trust the GPS in the car but she (it is a woman's voice) let us down dramatically. We asked her to find motels which she usually manages without turning a hair but for some reason she kept taking us to addresses which were obviously not hotels or motels, one was an office block, one a building site and the third in the middle of a roundabout. After 3 tries and lots of cursing we switched her off totally in disgust ... read more

Geo: -44.6987, 169.133Woensdag 9 februariNadat we vanmorgen Te Anau hadden verlaten, kwamen we terug in zonnig weer.

I checked out of my Premium Room With Lake View (at $149 NZ, the most expensive room I expect to be staying in on my trip) and thankfully bade farewell to the Internetless YHA Queenstown. Promptly at 11:45, the bus hired by Track and Trail Taieri showed up to take me to Pukerangi to meet the train. It was a Connexions bus, and it was responsible for getting a lot of people to a lot of different places in Central Otago. By the time we stopped at the airport, it was nearly full. I had had a double seat to myself up until that point, but when I saw two people about to get on, I knew I had to move, so I went up to the only two seats left, both singletons next to ... read more

Day 112-115 26th-29th December We were with Simon’s mum, Gay, for the next 2 days and spent a lot of the time chilling out. On Boxing Day we met up with Gillie and Simon’s friend, and stopped at a restaurant near Sumner beach and had yummy giant pizzas, Anna then went home and the four of us walked down to the beach and spent a couple of hours at there. It wasn’t as hot as sunny as it had been the previous day but there were lots of people out and once again, Ellory and Gillie were taking lots of arty photographs. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon and was certainly different from my normal Boxing Day tradition of eating leftovers and watching Christmas TV. We also picked up our hire car for ... read more

I spent the morning doing laundry. I stayed to watch my clothes, though I noticed that most people did not bother to do so, and I was able to help a teenaged boy who wasn't sure what settings he should choose on the washer. There was a separate laundry building, shared by the Pinot Lodge backpackers and the Chalets RV park. Laundry was a reasonable $6 a load -- three to wash; three to dry. Unfortunately, once again my wash did not dry in an hour, even though I selected Perm Press rather than Delicate. So I had a long wait, especially since it was hard to read Plum in the sunlight. The benches near the laundry were a bit low, too. In the afternoon, after trying and failing to chat with Jim -- I do ... read more

Internet connectivity is better today. Yesterday afternoon it was quite hopeless. I think the link must be getting saturated by too many people trying to use it at once. I bought another four hours' worth. The link's still not good enough to let me upload to Travelblog, though. Today I went to church at St. Andrew's, which proved to be an attractive 19th-century church. They do not have their own minister; apparently there is a shortage of clergy all over New Zealand. One Sunday a month they make do with a lay service, and this was that Sunday. So we had Morning Prayer. Everyone was very kind indeed. They took my name and then recognized me when they made their announcements. The service was simple and earnest, though modern. I liked the sermon, on Joseph's ... read more

Wireless internet is back up, at least for the moment. I bought four hours' worth at $15 and had a good chat with Jim. I hope it is 4 hours total and not four continuous hours! I went down to Rainbow Takeaways for breakfast, having no other practical option, and bought a nearly-inedible bacon and egg sandwich on New Zealand's equivalent of Wonder Bread, which set me back $5. I choked it down, and decided that a trip to the supermarket should be my top priority. The owner did drive me in, at about 11:30, and came back for me at 2. I spent the time in Cromwell's shopping district. The town was largely drowned by a dam in the 1970's, so everything was comparatively new, and somewhat quickly and cheaply built. It is warm ... read more
