Geo: -44.6987, 169.133The days had been counting down and I knew I had to face one of my fears. So far bungy jumping was in the back of my mind as we left Fox Glacier and headed towards Wanaka for some Skiing and Snowboarding at Treble Cone.We stayed in a small rest area at the base of a bridge just before Haast. It was a pretty wet night with some very heavy rain thrashing itself in to the camper and where the river had increased dramatically over night. We pushed on the following day to Wanaka, hoping the weather was clearer over the pass, but it was not. It continued to rain throughout the day. We didn't do too much in Wanaka unfortunately because we were looking forward to visiting it but the rain kept us quiet ... read more

Day 1: We picked up our 4x4 getting extra insurance and the hire costs all for $150 for the 3 days, between three of us a bargain! We made our way out of Christchurch with our first peak of the snow capped peaks almost as soon as we hit the main road out! We had been blessed with clear blue skies and crisp weather which was perfect to see all the peaks. We made our way, firstly with the hills in the background then by having them by the side of us with snow covered fields and snow by the side of the road. We arrived in Lake Tekapo by the afternoon and went to the hot springs which look out over the lake for sunset. It was beautiful but I would say that in hindsight ... read more

Geo: -45.5071, 170.119We had to blow through Dunedin a little quicker than we wanted to because our time in New Zealand is starting to wind down and we still have three ‘must-dos' on our list: mountain biking through part of the scenery featured in the Lord Of The Rings movie trilogy, swimming with endangered Hector Dolphins, and surveying the earthquake damage in Christchurch- not sure we'll get it all done. Cousin Robert had recommended something called the Rail Trail if we found ourselves in Central Otago, and here we were rolling into the pretend town of Middlemarch, which constituted the start or finish of the trail, depending on which way you were facing (after fighting to remember and pronounce the various Moari names of towns, it was nice to be in an area that made use ... read more

Geo: -44.6987, 169.133After leaving Franz Josef (the town and the glacier) we stopped in to see the nearby Fox Glacier. Along with Franz Josef, it is unique in descending 13 kms from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest. Although retreating for most of the last hundred years, both have been advancing since the mid 80's but we won't be getting into a global warming debate here. DH had satisfied her need to hang out with helicopter pilots for at least a while, so we just hiked up to the leading edge of this glacier where, at the fence line, we were met by a bulletin board containing reprints of newspaper articles detailing the deaths of people who had jumped the ... read more

Week 2 We spent the morning looking at the earthquake damage in Christchurch and the city felt eerie as it was so deserted. There was lots of damage; buildings collapsed and if they weren’t already down they were being demolished as they were no longer safe, we both felt sad to see it and so didn’t spend long there. Then it was time to collect Benn and Ange from the airport and we were feeling a bit strange for seeing people for the first time and letting them in our bubble! It was great to see them and we slipped straight back into normality; abusing each other etc! We had a pretty chilled night a few drinks and games of cards because Benn and Ange were knackered after their mammoth flight, although we did manage a ... read more
