So I've finished packing and now the nerves are starting to set in!! I can't help but worry about will I have the courage to meet new people in Vancouver?? Since I'm not meeting Spence or Sophie till Calgary and I have a week n Vancouver alone :S Haha But I just checked the weather report and the funny thing is the only difference between Wellington and Vancouver is the fact that Wellington has wind and Vancouver doesn't. Despite the fact NZ is in Spring! and Canada is in Autumn! Now that doesn't seem right does it? O well time to turn off the Lappy and Pack it for the flight even though I don't leave for another 6 hours but I need to get my Outrageous Fortune fix before I go oh and Marmite!! ... read more

The end of our time is Wellington has come, so as its the last time we will have easy access to a computer we will give all you avid readers a little update of our final days in the Capital. Julia went away with her parents between Christmas and New Year to see a little bit of the North island, and even bullied the whole family into jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane to do yet another skydive. She went black water rafting in the Waitomo Caves, visited a living Maori thermal village, and finished the expedition off with another quad biking trip. While Julia was away having a whale of a time, Dan was slaving away in order to be able to put some food on the table. Christmas in retail means long hours, ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all the lovely cards and presents :) We hope everyone at home had a great Christmas with lots of snow! Our Christmas day was very different to what we are used to...it began with opening presents and our stockings from Santa, then we headed off to the beach for a paddle in the sea. We were planning to have a picnic on the beach but it was very windy, so we ate that in the car instead. In the afternoon we headed home, and spent the rest of the day out in the garden playing frisbee and lounging around, then had a huge barbequed feast thanks to our housemate, Scott. We both got some great presents, lots of lovely English chocolate (the chocolate here isn't very nice), a book all ... read more

It’s been a while since we last did a blog. We haven’t got much to write about, however we though we would show you some of the eyesores around Wellington… We’re still working hard, saving the pennies for our next big adventures…Julia is still working as a nanny, enjoying the playgrounds and beaches during the weeks, and exploring Wellington at the weekends. Dan on the other hand has become a sales super star with Telecom and is earning heaps of commission. He joins Julia and the boys on his days off for picnics and walks around the clifftops. Other news from our side of the world…we have sold our beloved campervan Joey, and are going to camp our way around the North island, so will be braving tents and wild campsites for 2 months! We have ... read more

We left Whakapapa on Saturday morning and headed south via Wanganui, back down to Wellington. We spent the night at "Moana Lodge" in Plimmerton and headed into the capital for a meal and the chance to see Quantum of Solace again on a big cinema screen. The next day we caught the ferry across to South Island and drove home via Marlborough and Kaikoura, stopping to see the seal colonies and 'Cobb Cottage' - an original settler's cobb cottage that has miraculously survived the years of earthquakes that have flattened all it's contemporaries. In total, we covered 3149km in just over two weeks but it helped that petrol was down to a $1.289/litre (with supermarket vouchers) which is pretty cheap. It's on it's way up again though. The wine was great as was the food and ... read more

The next morning Brid and Chris decided to go just south of Palmerston to visit the Tui factory; we opted out and decided to press on to The Kapiti Coast and more importantly Kapiti Island Bird Sanctuary. On the way down the very hilly South East coast we made a couple of quick stops. First was at Waitarere Beach, all very windswept and a taste of things to come. On the turn off for the beach we saw a sign saying ‘HORSE POO 50c Bag’; of course we stopped for a photo. By know it was mid-afternoon and we were ready to eat. I spotted a guy parked up with his kids eating a bag of chips. When I asked where the chippy was he laughed and thrust a very large portion of hot chips in ... read more

Note: This is a journal entry from when I was an exchange student in 1994-1995. The photos have been scanned from the original prints. Living around the Pauatahanui Inlet for a year was amazing. It is such a beautiful place, whether enshrouded in mist, or peppered with yachts for the Sunday Regatta. I loved to look at it by moonlight, when it was all silvery and peaceful. The weekly Rotary meetings I attended were at the Paremata Boat Club, so I got to watch the last light of day on the Inlet once a week. I was lucky enough to go out on the water one Sunday during the Regatta, not on a sailboat but on one of the zodiacs that 'patrols' during the regatta. I got a sunburn after spending one sunny spring afternoon wading ... read more
