Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

New Zealand Location

Hello again, On Sunday afternoon, we went about 20 km (12 miles) to Matamata to see where they filmed part of "The Lord of the Rings". We didn't realize that they used so many locations on the North and South Island. However, since the Seays wanted us to bring a Hobbit back and this was Hobbiton, we decided to investigate. They did use a farm outside of Matamata to make the Hobbit's homes and have left the movie set as a tourist attraction. However, the tickets for a 2.5 hours tour was $50.00 each and we decided to get the Seays [View Full Entry]

Chrissy Getting Caught
Chrissy forgiven & joining the force

Hello, I'll try to catch up a little today. We went down country on Thursday last to visit a friend in Rotorua and meet his family. Rotorua is famous for its fishing (rainbow trout all 3-8 lbs) and its thermal activity. It had changed dramatically since we had been here last. It is so much for the tourist dollar that it surprised us. The sulphur smell from the hot pools was just the same. My favorite place had not changed or become commercial either. There is a beautiful little Anglican/Maori church that was started as the first permanent Christian church in [View Full Entry]

Sorry, I have been having so much trouble trying to get this out. We have been here almost a week and everything is quite wonderful and exciting. We had a good albeit rather long trip on the plane. The day we arrived was cool and cloudy, but not uncomfortable until the sun went down. Our friends, John & Betty Rose, met us and then, Kenneth Ranger and his family came and picked us up to go to Piha Beach where a lot of the church people we knew were having a reunion. It was marvelous to go back to the old [View Full Entry]
