Here is the blog's first video! Starring Tanner (Rachel is super jealous). It takes place at Cathedral Cove (technically the cove right beside Cathedral Cove) after a very long, hilly hike. In this scene, I'm trying to brave the arctic waters. I fail, but I do succeed later, we just couldn't get that one on video. That's the ticket.... read more

After a long and deep sleep I awoke to find my lock had been tampered with, so I breathed a sigh of relief that i'd thought to wear my tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt to bed as it meant a trip down to Reception to ask for some lock cutting equipment. With the lock sorted I found the quay and bought my ticket over to Rangitoto island (a volcano which last erupted 600 years ago). The trip across was quite calm but perishing cold, i almost reconsidering sitting out on the deck but persevered so i could get the most of the sights around me. The route up to the summit was quite challenging at times which you'd expect of a volcano with the black basaltic rock and mangled roots which made up the pathway. I ... read more

Kia Ora chapesses and chaps and welcome to the first real blog of 2007. I can't believe that I've taken so long to write this blog that summer has now been and gone! After a very slow start, summer eventually arrived in early January and continued on a warm, sunny and dry theme until just last week. Last week's weather madness was a cheeky wee storm that blew in with lots of rain, thunderstorms and high winds - luckily Wellington got off pretty lightly for a change and Auckland got it quite bad which was amusing especially as well get sent home at 3pm because of the severe weather warning and they didn't! hardeehar.... Anyway, now that the pending baby Galloway news has filtered out slowly, this blog will tell you and show you (sorry for ... read more

"Sorry, we're fully booked for tonight, please excuse any inconvenience through that." Na freundlich sind sie, das muss man ihnen lassen. Mein Magen war zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon nicht mehr so friedfertig gelaunt. Also weiter, aha eine Frittenhäuschen. Naja ich wollte ja was richtiges also weiter. Und ... read more

If Auckland appears to have hit the 21st century running, you don't need to travel too far to discover that the 1980's are still alive and kicking elsewhere.....indeed this might be generous as the music in the Goldfields Shopping Centre in Thames was distinctly 1974. Thames as you would guess from the above is a former gold mining centre that has found modern day solace in being the regional town for the Coromandel Peninisula and having the longest straightest shopping street in NZ. The drive to Coromandel Town was a very scenic wind up the coast - a delightful little town that has found it's niche after gold in cappucinos and art galleries and boasts a truly fine fish and chip shop (that knows what scraps are!!). The backpackers at the Lions Den also takes some ... read more

Thursday: Went and said goodbye to Byzantiums -the nicest place for brunch in Auckland and eat a pile of French toast, syrup and fruit and then dropped Rebeccah of at work and bought takeout lunch from Salad Works- the nicest make you own salads in Auckland. Then Tavis and I set of west to Hahei where Tavis use to go on holiday when he was a kid (he lived here till he was 7). We set up camp- yes a tent and then went to hot water beach- which does as it says on the tin! You dig a hole at low tide and hot water from below seeps up. It its really hot (60*C) and you have to mix it with cold water. It was really busy but we waited around until most people had ... read more

With my backpack ready, fresh and raring to go....off I went to see the sights of NZ and do everything a traveller should do! Stepping out on the street I felt invinsible and revelling in the freedom and the adventures that would come. Feeling like I was the only one who has ever done this I soon remembered that the only people up at 6am in the city are travellers.... and lots of them! And then came the flashbacks of carrying a cumbersum backpack...how long would I last! First stop, Hahei Beach on the Coromandel. Unfortunately due to 'inconvenient' tides I didn't make it to Hot Water beach but instead had the pleasure of visiting a local vineyard and having my first experience of Fejoa wine and other interesting liquer-type drinks...so i was happy! With some ... read more

Day 2 - a mostly-overcast and often rainy day. We started out in Auckland in the morning, where we managed to set out at 8:30am to find a bite to eat and to stop by the AA Centre to get reciprocal membership using our U.S. AAA cards. Then it was back to the car and the Southern Motorway for a day on the Coromandel Peninsula. One of Ben's first observations on this, our first true "roadtrip day" was that the blue "services" signs along the road used an image of a carrot and apple as their shorthand for "food available here", while in the U.S. the equivalent symbol is a burger. A telling (and humorous) difference! By the time we got to the town of Thames at the foot of the peninsula, the rain was pouring ... read more

Forgive me while I write this, I've had a few glasses of wine. Since Mark and I have lost all sense of time, date and routine, we have had to adopt new ones, like starting the day with a three hour walk in the morning along a white sandy beach and ending the day with a bottle of New Zealand wine. But before this becomes another "wish you were here, life doesn't get much better than this" emails, I'm going to tell you the truth...New Zealand sucks. I mean, how many times can you round a corner and be surprised by another beautiful cove, another picturesque beach, another 2000 year-old tree? We found a beach that sits atop a hot spring, so if you dig deep at low tide, you can dig yourself a nice spa ... read more

We ended up staying on in Coromandel a few days longer than planned and took advantage of a sunny Sunday to visit Wyrna Bay, take a Kauri forest walk to Tuck's Bay and drive up to Colville for ice cream at the end of the day. The sunset on the way home was the most impressive we have ever seen. The highlight of the next couple of (rainy) days was cooking and eating fresh Snapper and Oysters (caught and collected by our mate Myles). On leaving Coromandel we drove around the top of the peninsular before turning south towards Tauranga. Even though we hadn't expected the weather to be good enough or the tide to be right we managed to be driving past the famous "Hot Water Beach" for a second time at exactly the right ... read more
