Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.

Fiji - 10 years on.

Selling food at the market
Arriving in Fiji after a 10 year absence, I was keen to both relive my childhood memories and discover new areas that I had not been to. Not wanting to stand out like every other tourist I immediately caught the bus that would take me away from Nadi to Lautoka and checked in to a cheap hotel on the outskirts of town. The first thing I did in town was go to the roadside stalls that sold Indian sweets and food which I had missed all those years. After spending $4 I had eaten enough to last me until morning when [View Full Entry]

this is our last day in fiji, which has been great! it is unbelieveably like india... the smell, food, people, weather.. and when it stopped raining we actually saw what we had come to see ie blue skies, seas and beaches! we stayed on another island for the past 4 days- called mana island. cos we obviously aint got as much money to spend we stayed in a backpackers place.. but it was right next door to where tom hanks stayed when he filmed castaway! and apparently the island where they filmed it is just like it looks in the movie.. spent 2 nights here as the only guest before taking a ferry from vitilevu to vanua levu. lots of snorkling, kayaking, and swimming...
sorry to be so brief on this, but these are some pictures from fiji. it was really great there...but i did get back to the states with some strange things i picked up along the way on the islands. needless to say, i may not go back because of those little buggers, but for the most part, i had an amazing time there! i spent about 5 days on a pearl farm hanging out with nusqe, the manager and lamanie and grommet the two pit bulls. hope you enjoy the pics :) [View Full Entry]

'Bula' from Fiji... Purely by luck we were told at the last minute about a resort in the Yasawa Islands, north of Viti Levu (the main island). The island was Waya and the resort Octopus. When we got booked in I thought great, play some tennis, eat in one of the few restaurants they're bound to have, walk round the resort, maybe use the gym and obviously the pool....oh no, no.. the boat rounded a corner and in front stood the tiny beach resort of about half a mile long by 60 yards deep at the base of some hills. Fiji

This is the end of a wonderful trip, the best three months of my life. Caitlin and I flew from Sydney to Auckland, then Auckland to Nadi. We arrived in Nadi pretty late and stayed at a hotel on the main island. The next day we caught a boat out to Beachcomber island. It was a pretty cool place. We slept in an outdoor dormitory style bulding with about 100 beds. You could walk around the entire island in 10 minutes. The snorkeling was great, and most of the people we met were extremely nice. I cant believe that this time [View Full Entry]

After almost two weeks of beach life we decided to take a trip to see something of note. The hostel was running a small tour to a local village so we could see how 'real' Fijians live. The village was situated about 25kms inland from the coral coast. Nine of us piled into a truck facing each other and we set of for the bumpy journey. The truck had two uncomfortable wooden benches to sit on and a linoleum roof, at least there was plenty of air flowing through. The road was good for about 5 mins, then we started to [View Full Entry]

We've been here a week and done very little, we go to sleep about 9pm as the sun wakes us up at 6am, we've been lying on the beach every day and swimming in the sea, it's been great to relax and catch up with some reading. The food has been good and the weather even better, it rains every day but only for about 10 minutes or so but boy does it come down however 10 minutes later you would have no idea that it had been wet. We took a bus to the Capital, Suva, one day and that [View Full Entry]

We actually arrived yesterday (Friday) but didn't want to add to the already huge post. This is where the diarised journals stop and the interesting only stuff appears, we'll keep it updated as much as we can and will include photo's as and when we can. We arrived at Nadi (Nan-dee) International Airport around 1pm, it was a 3 hour flight from Auckland and we gained an hour too, we're now 12 hours ahead of GMT. The heat instantly struck us, it had just stopped raining and the humidity was as hot as I've ever felt, it was only 25 degrees [View Full Entry]

Hey folks, So thought it was about time we told you what we got up in the glorious pacific island of Fiji. Well, for starters it's a darn sight hotter than where you are!! Smugness over, I promise. We landed in Nadi on 5th February at 4am, having left LA on the 3rd, and crossing the international date line meant that Friday 4th Feb never happened for us. Oh well. We were in a bit of a daze at that time of the morning, but managed to find our way to the tour office and get our transfer to the hotel. [View Full Entry]

My place viewed from the water
So back to Fiji.... The island I stayed at was absolutely amazing. I really need to catch up with my blogs because it is tiring writing about old stuff...so I'll go kind of quickly. (again…I’m not going to edit this so sorry if it is a little sloppy) So after that crazy hike that I talked about in my last email I ended up at this village. The village was right on the water in "one of the islands in the yasawa group". I'm staying at in a room that a lady name Adi rents out to tourist (but I am [View Full Entry]
