Cook Islands Travel Blogs

Background: Named after Captain COOK, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965 residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand. The emigration of skilled workers to New Zealand and government deficits are continuing problems.

Cook Islands

Cook Islands Location

Kia Orana (forgotten the exact meaning but they greet you with it a lot round here) Well I'm now in a completely different environment, my shuttle from Hollywood to LAX was fine and a superb 9 hour flight over the Pacific whereapon I had a short stopover in Tahiti where was greeted with a little white flour to put behind my ear, sadly on arrival in the cooks it was raining and you can't import flowers. Yes it was absolutely pissing it down but it cleared and got to hostel, whre they took us for a food shop. With some lovely [View Full Entry]

In the sun

The thought of 3 Months holiday straight, sounded just too stressful for us :-). So off to Rarotonga with the family for 8 days of Rest and Relaxation to prepare psychologically for the big event. We stayed at the Sunset Resort (which is worth a trip if you get to Rarotonga) and got upgraded to beach front units! The resort is brand new after being rebuilt after the Hurricane. One of the first things we did was go to the Ministry of Transport to get our licence. The sign says it all. The days were spent enjoying the sun, swimming (mel [View Full Entry]

A marvellous holiday with the kids and partners before they head off overseas. Highlight was Tim proposing and being accepted. Rarotonga is a great holiday destination, clean, good food, accommodation at all price levels and sandy beaches to die for, plus pretty good snorkelling off the beach. Have marine reserves with some large fish in addition to all the beautiful reef fish. No nemos. The coloured coral is coming back after the cyclones of 2006. Stayed at the Sunset Resort on the beach front. Lived up to its name. To have a proposal on the sand - bended knee and all, [View Full Entry]

Atiu, Cook Islands

Oceania » Cook Islands » Atiu
Right I thought I should write a bit about our experiences in Atiu because it’s such a special little place. Atiu is in the Cook Islands, a short flight from Raratonga and although it’s the third biggest island in the Cooks, it has only about 500 people (and declining) living there in a collection of 4 or 5 villages at it’s centre. We caught the weekly flight from Aitutaki in this tiny airplane which held ten passengers, the pilot doubled up as the air stewardess, and we had a fantastic view of the cockpit. Bouncing our way through the air with [View Full Entry]

Hello boys and girls heres a little story about the time Tom and Liz went to the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands are a group of 15 islands in the middle of the Pacific, 241 sq km of land to be exact over 2'000,000 sq km of water which is pretty impressive. The Cooks are internally self governing but have very strong links to New Zealand (use NZ money, speak English - as well as Maori) since they became a British protectorate in 1888 as they did not want to become a French colony, (ok quoting from Lonely Planet now but [View Full Entry]

Another beach.. (at Raro)

Hey guys, just a quick message before I leave the Cook Islands tonight and head to Fiji. Ive spent the last week living with three girls, Steph, Holly and Chrissy, and a guy called Ste, we managed to find a cool house for only NZ$15 a night, which is nothing, its right near one of the best beaches, as soon as I get to NewZealand and they have some kind of Broadband I'll put a few pictures up here for you guys. Last Saturday we got motorbikes out, and went round the Island, stopped off at a few beaches and [View Full Entry]

It's a hard life...

Oceania » Cook Islands » Rarotonga
What a busy few days we have had in our tropical paradise. We have been busy snorkelling, kayaking and cycling. The snorkelling is excellent and we have been nearly every day. There are so many fish and they are really colourful. Our favourite is the Picasso triggerfish which really looks like Picasso painted it. As well as the fish there are hundreds if not thousands of sea cucumbers as well as the occasional massive blue starfish. All very groovy. We hired bikes on Monday and went for a cycle around the Southern and southwesterly p [View Full Entry]
