Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I flew into Sydney - from Auckland on the 21st Jan 2003. For two days I stayed in a scummy hostel in Kings Cross, an area with a deserved reputation. I headed over to Bondi - found a superior hostel - Indy's Backpackers and hung out. Again the backpacker crowd had changed - this time lots more young English and Irish travellers - on years working visa, looking for work, and taking pretty much whatever came their way. I got on with them but didn't make any friends or meet people of a like mind. I met up with Matt, Tank [View Full Entry]

It was the hour before sunrise when I trudged into the gloomy soothsayer's lair. "So, you have returned", whispered a voice which seeped from the darkness. I sat next to the old woman who was barely visable through the layers of black shawls she wore to keep out the chilly air. "And did my prophecy come true?", she continued. "Yes it did," I quietly replied, "Egypt was incredible! During the flight home, I was reading the works of Herodotus, the world's first historian, whose thoughts about Egypt are as true today as when he wrote them over 2,500 years ago - [View Full Entry]

Day One - November 30, 2002: Adelaide - Sydney - Bangkok I stayed up until 2:30am, packing my bags, on the Friday night before we left and only got four hours sleep. But I was so nervous about my first overseas trip that I wouldn’t have been able to sleep anyway. On the way to the airport it seemed I was not the only nervous one as Dad was driving through red lights on the way there and didn’t realise until we said something. Mum, Dad and Tammie saw me off at the airport, although our first hitch came quickly with [View Full Entry]

A Prophecy Oceania » Australia
The approaching storm stirred the blackened evening as I cautiously entered the soothsayer's lair... The elderly woman sat shrouded in the dim candlelight which flickered across the diaphanous fabric that adorned the ceilings and walls. "I shall tell your future, young man" she croaked. She picked up a delicate tea cup with her gnarled fingers, "the tea leaves reveal all." She looked at the tea cup intently for a few moments, then raised her head and looked at me through eyes filled with the secrets of the unknown. "You will soon travel," she whispered. "Yes, that is correct" I [View Full Entry]

Oo [View Full Entry]

Ja, saa sitter jeg her igjen da, paa flyplassen i Sydney. Surprises! Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Finally I left London on the 21st of October.....10 months to the day that I had arrived and secretly flew into to Brisbane (well secretly to everyone not living in the UK - though there were a few in on the secret). Spent a week catching up with close friends (namely Shan and Emma) and my adopted family up there. Great seeing everyone again! I then flew into Melbourne on the 31st of Oct funnily enough it coincided with Cup Week in Melbourne..... The aim was to fly in a surprise my parents. Things didn't go quite to plan. I got [View Full Entry]
