Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I have now made it to Oz and after some heavy questionning at immigration was allowed into the country! My first stop has been Perth. So far I have found it to be a lovely city. Easy to get around especially with free buses and friendly people. Spent a day at Fremantle or "Freo" as the locals call it. A really nice, relaxed port where I enjoyed walking around the famous markets and eating fish and chips at Cicerello's on the harbour. The museum was also really interesting and I enjoyed learning all about the immigration policies and the 10 pound [View Full Entry]

Her er fantastisk... [View Full Entry]

Today we saw Koalas! In the wild!!! We were just moving along 'Great Ocean Road' when suddenly we saw people at the side of the road pointing fingers, cameras and camrecorders into the treetops. When we got out there were 9 Koalas sitting in different trees along maybe 40 meters of the road. They were so cute and hugable adn they were close enough for us to get some pics and catch them on tape too! YEAY! Actually we saw another very special Australian animal before the Koalas: Dad spotted en Echidna sniffing along the road and made HH stop the [View Full Entry]

Newcastle is the second largest city in New South Wales which means it is pretty small. There's not much there and it seems to house most of Australia's chav population who cruise up and down the small sea front. Anyway, we went there mostly for the Sand Dunes just to the north where we went and rode quad bikes. After a brief initial ride we were ranked by ability in order to determine the riding order and the different groups. Sara was bottom of the class and I became top of the class due to everyone on my right inadvertently getting [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Beth has once again given me the go ahead of taking over the blog. Ok, I think where we last left off was we were going to the opera house for a syphony. The syphony was really a cool thing to see, we saw it in the concert hall of the opera house. The opera house actually has 4 different places where they have different events. A concert hall, opera house, drama theatre and playhouse. The concert hall is the biggest one which when you look at the opera house it is to the left (I think), anyway they [View Full Entry]

Flew to Aussie on Wednesday and chilled at my pregnant little Sister's place on the beach! Although i am back for 2 weeks holiday, my friend Dave has twisted my arm into supervising again at the Indy car race for 3 days. I have worked for him a few Indy's in the past. Hard work but lots of fun. The heat was almost unbearable but the cold icecreams helped out! I supervised the hairpin section again which has the best view of the track so got some cool pics. Amy and Erika flew in from Auckland on Saturday and hit The [View Full Entry]
