Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

A bit of a drive in the Australian Bush, just over 2000 kms through the Gibraltar Ranges and New England. Some of these pictures are pure Australiana. Starting off with a few road signs that you will not generally see in any other country. In front of the third sign is a flood level indicator, this provides for water up to two metres deep, useful if you are trying to figure out if it is safe for you to drive through; we often do get those levels of floodwater in the annual big wet. WHAT A DAY... ergh. to the tune of $800... still, with a reasonable condition engine and a body in pretty good nick, and a gas conversion! it's still not too bad all up... after trusting my mechanic to the point of following him for the past 5 years through 3 different locations, and referring many friends to him too... I have no choice to retract my praise and compliments. Sure he looked after me with favours and squeezed me in for this and that here and there over the years which was all appreciated but now, come an important time I [View Full Entry]

Wow. Two days have gone by. Yesterday I did a temp job up in Pyrmont where I filled in as a receptionist while everyone went to watch the Melbourne Cup on telly. Makybe Diva won for the third consecutive year! Amazing. It's funny how you get caught up in the excitement when you're here - even in Sydney. I can't even begin to imagine what it would have been like in Melbourne. The day was boring though, only about 8 people called in the 5 and 1/2 hours i was alone, so the rest of the time I read Vogue, wrote [View Full Entry]

We arrived in the lovely and very dead town on South West Rocks, the day before the Melbourne Cup. We did not have a pre-arranged place to stay, so we headed to the tourist information spot. They sent us to this "not-so-nice" motel. After passing on the motel, we went across the street and Sarah and I went into a real estate holiday place. We immediately were able to get a 2 bedroom apartment, one block from the beach and at a cheaper rate ($60 per night) than the seedy motel. After arranging the apartment, we headed to the local dive [View Full Entry]

Crikey. It has been a while since I’ve updated this thing. Four weeks, in fact. I’ve just finished my last month of classes here at UWA and have pretty much finished my schoolwork, too. I only have one exam—for psychology—and that is on November 16th, two weeks away! What to do until then?! Hey, how about write a travel blog? While I’ve been pretty dutiful about relating the big trips and travel experiences from this semester, there have been several excursions that escaped any mention. Thus this entry focuses on those outings, experiences, and events (as w [View Full Entry]

I went camping with Don, Lucky, Marrika, Malik, Klauss, Michael & Sarah at the end of September. We wanted to camp by the sea but realised that no campsites along the coast allow fires, and you must have a fire when you go camping so we got a tip from a guy at Port Lonsdale and drove for another hour and half to a campsite inland at Stevenson's Falls, north of Apollo Bay (on the Great Ocean Road). It was already dark when we got there and it had rained earlier so I think it was about 3am when we finally [View Full Entry]
