Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Capella here we come! Oceania » Australia » Queensland
So, just briefly a little more on what we did yesterday, after I wrote that entry. We headed a little more inland and ended up in Biloela. On the way we saw both Roos and Emus (this time wild ones for sure!) And it was a beautiful drive through the very different landscape, though we weren't really that far from the coast, maybe 120-150 km. Anyway, this morning we went inland for real leaving the coast almost at an angle heading straight west to begin with. We saw more Roos, more Emus (3) and we were almost melting away in the [View Full Entry]

*sigh* So much diversity and stimulation... So much opportunity and wonder... Paramatta to Bondi: A long-time friend's union with love to sunny sculptures by the sea... The colour around is beauty within... hey this is sounding more and more ethereal by the day eh? Just something to get up here so I can share the visuals!!! Oh and I must say, I really am enjoying my little world within the Utopian Luscious Beatnik :) It truly is just like coming home every night... as I approach him with keys in hand, I feel my haven near, I am coming home...

Mackay Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mackay
After our overnighter to Fraser Island we headed further North to Mackay and spent a day resting. (It's hard work all this travelling you know). We washed our clothes in possibly the worst washing machine I've encountered so far and hung them out to dry. We did encounter some wildlife in this hostel and Nick tried to practice his photography skills (which I have to say aren't brilliant, I don't really look like a witch all the time) on the local possum family. We arrived in Sydney on Nov 3rd. After such interesting navigating, we managed to find our hotel/apartment building. It was about a 10 minute walk from the outskirts of downtown. For those that know Vancouver, picture you apartment being on Hastings, just one block before Hastings turns into the really bad part of town. On Thursday afternoon, after checking into the hotel and taking a little break, I decided to head out for a walk and walk I did. It was about a 60 minute walk from our apartment to the Sydney Opera House. I got my bearings straight, checked out [View Full Entry]
