Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Deano!! Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth
Went to another Perth Glory game on the weekend, and deano finally managed to chip in with a goal. He was brought on after 15 mins becasue the striker on the pitch couldnt get his wedding ring off and had to be subbed. However, even though deano scored, he was then taken off again at half time, much to my dissapointment! Anyway, i went to the Royal Perth Show, its a bit like the kirkstall Festival, but not pathetically small, and then we were too skint to go out so got some dvd's in. We watched the local hero, which was [View Full Entry]

Well folks, Just a quick update to let you all know what is going on. Bec and I arrived back home in Australia late on a friday night and our mate Matt (and his darling wife Lara) picked us up from Sydney airport - owe ya one buddy. We stayed the night there and then went back to my parents place at Wyong just in time for my sister Carly's 30th birthday party. You should have seen the look on her face - she thought I was going to be in Canada for a few more months. The look was priceless [View Full Entry]

Here are some photos since I arrived in Sydney. Three other things I realized today: - Smith's chips... their thin cut roasted chicken chips. soooo good. - Watching Neighbours and Home & Away too often can be classified as a sickness. - Love the mangoes here, had totally forgotten how fabulous they are! Zinc Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney
Saturday ended up being another beautiful weekend day in Manly! We all wanted to try one of the beachside restaurants that has always looked appetizing called Zinc. So around mid-afternoon we headed that way.....our friend Jane, she works with Julia, met up with us and we had a most wonderful afternoon. The food was fantastic; pretty much all of us got a huge salad that was delicious. Our friends from Texas, Kelsey & Molly met up with us at our apartment before we headed out for a night on the town. Our first stop was of course our fave Sat. night [View Full Entry]

Tropical Rainforests and Coral Islands A few more pictures to show you what we have been up to. We hope you enjoy seeing them and that they show you the different sides of Australia. The weather has been very hot and sunny most of the time, but with the odd heavy rainstorm. There are some pictures in this entry that can be expanded by clicking on them, but don't forget, there is a separate gallery area with more and bigger photos. Elukoita Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Paivan ohjelmaan kuului talla kertaa poikkeaminen paikallisessa elaintarhassa.

Byron Bay Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay
We got the overnight bus to Byron Bay from Newcastle. Byron has very nice beaches and loads of activities on offer. It has a slightly resort like feel but remains pleasant place to be. We stayed in a couple of YHA's here for almost a week. We spent most days surfing including a lesson on the first day. Standing up was easy enough in the lesson on their big soft-ish learner boards and quite a bit harder ( though still achievable ) on the 'real' boards we hired after. We also spent a day cycling and walking and a morning on [View Full Entry]

Well, friends, The Celebration of Wilson is drawing to an end and what a fiesta it has been! I don't think any of us would be able to deny that he is a very attractive man. It is terribly unfortunate that we were only able to display a few photos of the vast library of images that makes up The Wilson Collection. (An interesting aside - I quizzed Buster Wilson why there are so many photos of him from the 86 collection. His reply - Well, I wasn't taking the photos. True, true, I have to admit. In fact I don't [View Full Entry]
