Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well, as whale watching was cancelled this morning due to high winds (Exmouth is obviously the place for me to not do much!), time to put some photos from the Kimberley trip on line. I'm hopping on the bus to Coral Bay at lunchtime and will spend a couple of days there, before a bus ride down the coast over 3 days - arriving in Perth on Sunday evening. Looking forward to a week there - the Fremantle festival is on next weekend so that should be good. [View Full Entry]

Today we had a lovely walk through Finch Hatton Gorge. Just beautiful! At one point there was a lovely rockpool where I had a swim and luckily it wasn't till afterwards I noticed the eels and stuff in there - though dad did tell me not to swim up the other end 'cause there was a snake in the water there. It was great having a swim 'cause it was a very hot day - 29 degrees when we had breakfast at 9.30 am. After our walk we headedd north again and we've ended up on a Motel in Airlie Beach. A Brief Discussion On Processed Food Down Under Each time I’ve tried to buy frozen chicken tenders or frozen fish stick I’ve come home only to read on the box that the cooking instructions are actually that. Cooking instructions. Not thawing - but cooking. Why? Because all the frozen food meats down here are raw! Can you imagine? No throwing some chicken nuggets into the microwave. Those bad boys have to be totally cooked or you’ll be serving up some E-coli Nuggets. It’s been exasperating since, if I’m going to go through the effort of cooking someth [View Full Entry]

What a day!

It is my intention to be photographed with as many different types of animals as possible in my life. They are intelligent and gorgeous creatures. I have been lucky in my University years, when I was modelling, to be allowed a lot of time with a koala and it's baby, whilst the photographer was trying to get the "perfect shot". I had a unique experience where the koala was very interested in me (or I smelt good) and she put her nose right up to my nose and we touched. The photographer was excstatic about this and took the shot in [View Full Entry]

So first impressions of Australia! The people are great. Its soo nice to be back in a place where you can speak your own language and people care about customer service. After yet another argument with Lan Chile whilst boarding the flight from Santiago to Sydney (its too annoying & frustrating to repeat...I'm still going through therapy ha ha!) it was fab to arrive in Sydney where the Qantas staff were so helpful, we even got some of our other flights changed for free :-) First impression of Perth where that we had arrived in an old peoples retirement village - [View Full Entry]

YEAY! We saw them! And four of them at that (maybe even 5). When we left Capella this morning our destination was Eungella National Park, famous for it's Platypus viewing opportunities. And true enough, as soon as we got down to the river (okay, maybe we had to wait for 5 mins) there the first one was. Just floating at the surface for maybe 30 seconds and whoop, off it goes again. They are just amazingly cute "little furballs with a bill in each end" as Hans said. Hehe, that's actually how it looks when you first see them because their [View Full Entry]

I’m back. As promised, this entry is about my trip to Rottnest Island. I departed with three friends last Thursday morning at Victoria Quay in Fremantle, a 30 minute bus-ride from Perth. The boat trip took about 30 minutes also, so within about an hour and a half of setting off from Trinity, we had planted our feet on the warm sands of Rotto. The island is about 11kms long by 4km wide, although there are three sizable lakes in the middle. Also, towards the west end, it narrows quite a bit. Hopefully I’ll be able to attach a picture of [View Full Entry]
