Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Melbourne Cup Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Flemington
Melbourne cup Hallo paardenliefhebbers!!!

November 1st Spent the day at Hartley's Crocodile Farm, just outside Cairns. Saw some very frisky (for them) Koalas. Kept the boys amused for ages. Then on to see the Salt Water crocodiles being fed. Learnt that they are lazy creatures with brains the size of a golf ball but are very strong. They move a lot faster in water than out. Most of their energy is from the sun. They will eat or kill at any time even if they are not hungry. Looked really fearsome to me. We moved to the freshwater crocs which are smaller and less of [View Full Entry]

Colors from Cairns Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
CAIRNS Colorful Cairns. Whether it was the fish and coral in the Great Barrier Reef, the flowers, the stained glass panels of St. Monica's Cathedral, the food, gelato or the characters we met, Cairns was colorful. Our biggest reason for going to Cairns was to get to the Barrier Reef. One day we went out for some diving and snorkeling. We want to mention the outfit that we chose because they were really, really good. We went on the Sea Quest with the Deep Sea Divers Den crew. It was a newer fast boat with a small number of passengers and [View Full Entry]

well, as i said before, Betty went away for the week and left me as the cook... so yesterday was a bit crazy, between feeding the chickens, donkey, cow and the humans... i made spagetti bologneise and a big tomato salad and a cherry pie.. apperantly everyone liked it (or were too hungry to care). the only problem was that the water refused to boil.. so we started eating half an hour later... it was really wierd cooking for so many people (were supposed to be 9, but were only 7 at the end). the farm life is soo cool, i [View Full Entry]

It's great! It's just great! I absolutely love it here. Moreton Island is definitely a place I'll be returning to some day, pity we're leaving tomorrow. Let me give you some keywords: White beaches Coconut Palms Blue water Sunshine 30 degrees celcius (at least) The whole day off to do whatever I wanted Fantastic day! But the best thing was feeding Nari! Feeding a wild dolphin is just something you can't describe, you have to try it to understand, but it was amazing, just amazing... :D I think I'll be dreaming about dolphins :D -Nim [View Full Entry]

Mens [View Full Entry]

Blue Parrot Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Potts Point
The Blue Parrot Hostel is a small, friendly place in Potts Point, Sydney. I came to Sydney a wiery, tired and penniless traveller. When I walked through the door on September 12st 2005 I was welcomed by one of the owners, Andrew. I felt completely at ease seeing that I was tired he quickly got the formalities over and done with and showed me around the hostel. It struck me straight away how cosy and comfortable the place seemed to be. A TV lounge (although the TV is not overbearing) and a free internet terminal in the corner. The Kitchen had [View Full Entry]

Day out at Bondi Beach

The road trip portion of our trip has begun! We picked up our rental car (Toyota Camry) at the Brisbane airport and we'll have it until we fly out from Sydney. It's great to have a car for the rest of our trip - now we don't have to lug everything around - we can just leave it in the trunk. We ended up staying one more night at Gord and Sheryl's place in Brisbane. We had been pushing Nathan pretty hard over the past few days, so we thought we'd give him a day off to nap and play at [View Full Entry]

October 24th Cairns Check out time 9.30 a little early. Steve picked up car but because he was early we got an upgrade. Drove along the coast, which appears similar to Hawaii, for a few kilometres and then turned inland. The scenery really changes here. Steep roads, rampant, lush and tropical vegetation. We are now in Far North Queensland in the Wet Tropics ...rainforest. Great views of the Cairns area from the lookout points. Can see the Hawl Along waterskiers. They have a zip wire and are dragged round the lake by that instead of a boat. Arrived at Kuranda mid [View Full Entry]
