Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

on the road
ROAD TRAINS
And then the land becomes hilly

Today we left Cape Tribulation, but I am absolutely positive I will return some day. It's an amazing place! And it'll prolly be even more amazing in the non-box-jelly-fish-months when you can swim out to the reef from the beach, it's that close up here! Anyway, after yesterdays great experience (with a little too much sun perhaps .s ), we headed back south and west to Atherton Tablelands. Cool place! You og up and up and up the mountain sides covered in rainforest, reach the top and *pang* there you are on the flattest of flat plains with termites and dry [View Full Entry]

First stop, pardon, premier arret, Arrarat.

5 weeks to go! Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney
Yep, only 5 weeks to go till i leave work and head back to Yamba for Xmas. Before then there's so much to do. Most of this is boring stuff like collating my super and getting Hep B shots, however, there are other, more exciting, tasks such as: - writing the "Best Men's" speech for Santi and Andee's wedding; - organising the bucks party in Kaui; and - attending the Harry Potter Goblet of Fire Premiere! and probably cooking turkey for the Xmas dinner. Today we went and marched against Howard's IR reforms. That was fun. This evening netball was cancelled [View Full Entry]

ANOTHER GREAT WINERY
VICTOR HARBOR, S A

The Blue Mountains Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Katoomba
Sophie and I wanted to fill up our valuable 2 weeks together so we took a 2hr train ride to Katoomba from Sydney and spent three days touring, hiking and partying in and around The Blue Mountains! We met a couple of other pommie girls and a few randoms at the local pub. Thanks goes to Jamie, our hostel manager and personal tour guide! Oh and his crazy friends Shane and Joe. We even rode the mountain climbing tram... and the explorer bus was wonderful and impressively reliable! :-) Once again, a good time was had by all! [View Full Entry]

Mission Beach Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach
We stayed at Mission Beach for 3 nights. There's not much there except for a big beach but we mainly stopped in order to go white water rafting in nearby Tully. The rafting was good fun, though would probably be better in the wet season. Many of the rapids were more like puzzles ( finding gaps big enough to pass through ) than they were white knuckle rides. Still, we enjoyed it and it was a good way to stay cool and Sara only fell out of the boat a couple of times. [View Full Entry]
