Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

We arrived in Australia tired and sullen. Asia was gone and a lifestyle abandoned. It was back to western values, western attitudes and western costs - the latter being the most daunting. After 6 months of cheap food and accommodation we were apprehensive of the forthcoming cost cascade. Our first shock was the accommodation fee, our second the price of food. On that first day we spent hours looking around for saver brands and out of date stock - with little success. Over time we've managed to find a balance between eating 49 cents noodles all the time and good healthy [View Full Entry]

Nog 5 dagen..... Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » St Kilda
Hey mates! Well, I did it. This morning at 11.30am I was collected from my hostel taken to an air strip, given 5 minutes training, flown to 14 000ft and then thrown out of an aeroplane! I have to say that for some reason I wasn't scared at all and loved every minute of it! It was such an amazing experience and I can't wait to go again. My instructor - Bruce (No I am not making it up he really was called Bruce) was really fun and has done an excellent DVD so you can all see for yourselves when I get [View Full Entry]

So, we're back from a wonderful trip to Queensland with just a few more days in Aussie before we head to Hong Kong. After Holden blew up in a heated argument with the shuttle driver from the airport, we found a new hostel near downtown - Wake Up Hostel. Pretty nice, but we had to room in a dorm with four other people. It wasn't that bad. One attraction we had yet to see was the Blue Mountains National Park, just two hours outside of Sydney by train. Nice day trip to a very pretty area. The pictures tell the story....... [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone, We've arrived in Brisbane and are finally done with our bus transport!! Bus is by far the worst way to travel...so slow! Anyways, when we were back in Hervey Bay we went out to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. We went on a self drive safari with 8 other people that we got put with in a 3 ton 4X4 vehicle. The morning we left we had an hour briefing on safety and instructions on how to drive on the loose sand and beaches. Needless to say after the briefing we got the feeling that [View Full Entry]

Finding Nemo! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Had a good couple of days in Darwin and enjoyed the nightlife. Apparently I was in the same bar as the actor Hugh Jackman (not exactly sure who that is!). Oh well. Then headed to Cairns where I spent the last five nights. Enjoyed a mad daytrip by Uncle Brian's tour company where we were all singing and dancing with a toy Elmo?! Did get to see some sights as well including Babinda boulders, Josephine Falls and Milla Milla Falls where they filmed the Timotei advert from a few years ago. It was great fun rock sliding until one girl knocked [View Full Entry]

Goodbye Melbourne!!! Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Hello!!! Just a quick first entry into this new travel diary to set it up before I go (thanks Luke). Departing in a week for the unknown that waits in Croatia! Hopefully a few more fun times in Melb before I depart! I will update with news and events during my stay in Zagreb. Guess I have to get there first before I can really start. So for all those keen, keep an eye out for the ‘Adventures of Me’. To those I’ll leave behind in Oz, enjoy the sun, sand and summer. Look forward to seeing you other girls in [View Full Entry]
