Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Alright, so the topic being Manly, I have to say how brilliant it is that there is a suburb that they named Manly. It is named such, and I quote from my helpful DK Top 10 Sydney book: "because Governor Phillip felt the Aborigines he met here in 1788 were 'manly'." I will only make one comment about the boys, in that they are indeed manly out there... but it may be due to the board shorts and the surf, but the sun tends to make people look healthier, I think. I just had to include a picture of a restaurant [View Full Entry]

We finally got aroung to having a house warming party at the beginning of November. It was also a goodbye party for Liza & Micah who are going to do some travelling and work in Canada for a few months (you can check their blog out at Liza & Micah ). We were lucky enough to have decent weather for the event. We had fairy lights, candles, and even a fire to create a party atmospehre. There were lots of people, lots of drinking and lots of dancing. That was until the police dropped by, after some complaints from the neighbours. [View Full Entry]

Planning It is warm this Sunday - but in the north there is heavy rain and thunderstorms, and its heading our way! We need to head South, but not too far away and move quickly - if we can get the walk in before lunch we may stay dry. The choice was Shepherd's Hill Recreation Park - a 2.5 hour walk in George Driscoll's 50 Real bushwalks around Adelaide, and only 22 kms away from home. It is also a new one for us - which enhances the walking experience. How to get there This was too easy - from the [View Full Entry]

Resting in Hervey Bay Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay
This morning we decided to stay here in Hervey Bay today as we slept so late we'd be having trouble finishing the laundry and uploading and stuff till after 12 o'clock. After much toil and hard work we managed to get some breakfast while our clothes were being washed, and after a long walk through the town me and dad finally found the internet café we had a flyer from saying they ahd LAN access... And they did, for their own comps! We couldn't log ours on, so dad tried to find somewhere else to get connected while I spent our [View Full Entry]

Hervey Bay (15,9 km) Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay

Gossip! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Gold Coast » Mt Tamborine
Well, i landed in Brisbane to be greeted by Emma (and rain!). A crazy, slightly tearful reunion on my behalf (its amazing what a long haul flight and the realisation of what you're doing can really have!). Anyway, once we had composed ourselves, Em gave me the guided tour back to their house in Upper Coomera. The journey mainly consisted of me saying "wow" every five minutes.... I mean how often do you see a flock of cockatoos and other amazingly colourful birds just sitting on the fence as you drive down the highway! To say the least I was very [View Full Entry]
