Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well, allot has changed the last month. My friend Nikki, from Calgary, arrived from the Gold Coast at the end of October, so I have had someone to accompany me for the last while. She also convinced me, with little resistance, to switch hostels to one right in the heart of St kilda. which is much closer to everything. Shopping, groceries, bars, internet access, and people my age and only a minute to the beach. We took a short tour of the hostel, X Base Backpackers, and found it to be much more like a hotel than anything else. Quite nice. [View Full Entry]

My (and Bo's) last weekend in Melbourne for a while Hey guys, am trying to figure out this whole blogging thing, so making a trial entry kinda thing to make sure I know what I'm doing. Actually, I guess I'm just procrastinating. I still have 2 exams to do, a house to move out of and clean from wall to wall as well as random things I need to do to go overseas - getting my money changed, picking up tickets and the like. Lez's 21st Birthday I am going to put up some of the more suitable photos from Lez's [View Full Entry]

Firstly, I'd better offer some sort of apology for the lateness of this diary entry. It's been just over a week since my last entry, 9 days if I'm honest, and too long. Sadly for you guys it does mean this one's a bit longer than the previous entries... Moving seamlessly from the last entry which was the end of my diving course, I had a pretty relaxing day on the Saturday (12th), relaxing by the pool and wandering along the seafront of Cairns. I also booked into some activities the first of which was the following day - for those [View Full Entry]

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" I am starting to think Lewis Carroll wrote that with Australia in mind and he just wasn't sure what the official name were for the various things that bit and had claws. Early this past week Abby got attacked by a horde of ‘sea lice’. These feisty organisms are really nasty little worms that live in birds, and then jump ship to snails where they do the whole egg/larvae thing and then they look for another bird to invade. To the beach! Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darlinghurst
A weekend to chill... so naturally being in Oz a beach would be wonderful! We had all heard that a place called Manly was a beautiful beach town, just North of Sydney across the water. Packed my board shorts and headed to the Circular Quay Harbour to jump on a ferry to Manly. The ferry went right around the Opera house and quite close to Harbour bridge, the views were stunning so it was cameras at the ready and super snapping began, sadly this computer doesn't have USB socket though darn it! will upload them soon. We arrived in Manly with [View Full Entry]

Camping is the way forward.... Even though you are well prepared for the fact that your money won't go that far in Australia after being in the cash cushion of Asia....it still manages to take you by surprise somewhat. For example the bus ticket that I bought for all my travels in Vietnam..from the North to the South of the country cost $20 USA...To travel from Perth to Darwin on a Greyhound bus cost in the vicinity of $600 aussie dollars, obviously the mileage is somewhat greater in the latter of the two but you get the idea of the disparity. Ok, exciting news of the week: I was in the Australian Geographic store in Bondi yesterday and I found the cutest stuffed emu. So I started to play with it and then I opened up the tag attached to its side and it said "My name is Sharlene". No joke. So I bought it (because it's ME, in emu size!) and have enclosed a photo. Last couple days have been relaxing. Lauren, my friend who I've known since I was 4 years old came up to visit so we did the touristy Opera House and boat cruise etc. Yesterday we walked [View Full Entry]
