Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Woke up early yet again. I have a purple sunburnt nose, how did this happen with factor 50?! We got a taxi to Wicked's depot bright and early and sat about for about an hr waiting for the van to be 'ready'. Checked out the vans parked outsiude and was pleasantly surprised at how they looked and how clean they were.......then enter Samantha. Oh dear Lord. Our vans theme is to insult the car rental companies Avis and Hertz by using grafittied bum humping kangaroos and very subtlely (yeah right) insinuating the word Avis is actually anus...lovely :) Alas, the artwork [View Full Entry]

Waking up somewhere as beautiful as Parachilna Gorge is never a hardship. The morning had a chill so we huddled around the fire toasting bread and heating water for coffee on the fire before rolling up our swags and packing up camp. Before we left we decided we should have a quick bushwalk around the area because even Ian had never been there before. One thing I that love about the Heading Bush company and it's attitude is that each tour is different and the itinerary is never set in stone. Obviously there is an outline but if something comes up [View Full Entry]

DAY 385 Firstly, Happy Birthday Gary Barber, 46 today, hope you have a good day, matey, back home in Tamworth, Staffordshire. This morning I was up before the sun, I guess that it wasn’t being lazy, I just suppose it wanted an extra half an hour in bed, which is possibly fair and reasonable, but it left us with a cloudy and cool morning. This is one of those mornings that we need the sun after our mega rain, which was fairly constant for about 18 hours, the tent needs to dry out as we will need to be packing away [View Full Entry]

On Monday I started a five day tour that covered over 3000 kms up the coast from Perth and back again. If you were to continue on highway 1 northward you would reach Darwin some 5000 kms away. The distances are huge and it’s difficult for us Brits to imagine. Highway one you would think, might be a 2/3 lane motorway, they have the land to build modern roads but highway one turned out to be a one lane road with overtaking lanes every 50 kms so if you get stuck behind a road train ·( trucks with up to 5 [View Full Entry]

Concluding our time in Melbourne, I've had a good time here. Well, all the time I've been out the hostel anyway! I'm not sure what it is, but I always get stuck in a hostel full of perverts, 2 nights ago, in my Dorm, on the bunk below me, a fellow male dorm-mate, and a creature of the night, or atleast from another room, decided that they couldn't wait for a rubbish shag. If ever any of you are in a long term relationship, and lament the advantages of being single, don't covert the sex, because from the too much I've [View Full Entry]

Utrolig digg! Fredag tilbrakte vi i sola, bare chilla å nøyt ferien. Gutta hadde [View Full Entry]

So, since my last blog post when I was in a fowl mood. Work has improved a great deal no ones really on my back anymore. Which is nice, I dont come home needing a large mug of wine lol A few weeks ago we re created an aussie/canadian thanksgiving, we couldnt find a turkey so we had two chickens. I made stuffing, carrots and mash potatoes. The meal turned out really good, I think we should do chicken all the time, its not soo dry. I had to hang all the bread in the air, because I couldnt leave it [View Full Entry]

If you are landing in Sydney, a couple of places are distinguished for this purpose. Discover furry koalas, skipping kangaroos and shy platypus in zoos and wildlife parks just minutes from the heart of Sydney city. Don't expect to see kangaroos or reptiles when you have landed in Sydney, if you do, you must have landed somewhere else. If you have confirmed your destination (which is Sydney) then I guess you must have your eyes checked. Many tourists still see Australia as having a land with kangaroos on the street. Most of them are found somewhere on the bush or some [View Full Entry]

Hey! I'm waiting for the taxi to the airport at the moment. Will fly to New Zealand and meet with Michael. So I thought I could use the time to give you a short update. Adelaide was really nice. Friendly people, hot weather and a nice beach. I just uploaded some pictures Wolfgang and me've taken at the Cleveland Wildlife park. We even fed the Wallabies and the Emus (those were more interested in the whole bag than actually what we've given them. So if you take a look at the pictures watch out for the Emus and where they looking [View Full Entry]
