Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

19-10-09 On the road again !!! By 8am & into a big head wind , this must be one of the windiest parts of the WA coast. We stopped at Minilya Roadhouse & filled up with Gas ($1.05) we did not need petrol which was $1.66 litre. We pushed on literally pushing the wind aside, we turned off 24km’s north of Carnarvon & went the 49km’s to Point Quobba campsite. We had travelled 250 km’s today. Well I did not know what to expect of this place, I knew by lots of reports it was windy, but as at this time [View Full Entry]

From Cairns, I caught a bus south to Townsville; then I took a 30 min ferry across to Magnetic Island. I stayed at Base hostel and it was so beautiful! My first full day on Magnetic Island and I headed to Horseshoe Bay to do some hikes. The first hike was a 1.5 hour walk to Balding Bay, where there was some beautiful forests and rock formations; part of the forest had recently burned and was all black. It was a beautiful Bay. I went for a little swim then headed off to Radical Bay. Another beautiful bay with amazing blue [View Full Entry]

After taking a detour and stopping off at the Douglas Hot Springs (John’s first driving off road experience) we eventually reach another part of the Nitmiluk National park - Edith Falls. It lies on the western boundary of the park and in theory we could have walked here from Katherine Gorge (but we didn’t!) We head up the steep hill to the Leliyn lookout before heading to the upper pool. It was a bit of a scramble over the rocks to get there but once there we are in for a surprise. First there is a stunning waterfall but also a [View Full Entry]

After crossing the Tropic of Capricorn for the third time on our road trip we headed down to Alice Springs. On arriving into the town we were somewhat dismayed to see so many drunks on the streets and the whole town seemed to have a real air of misery around it- not helped by the fact that the weather seemed to have taken a turn for the worse and was now very cloudy and gloomy. After a quick pit stop we headed out of Alice Springs towards the homestead at Curtain Springs where we had decided to spend the night. Once [View Full Entry]

So today I sat my “Approved Manager” course with Clubs WA. 12-5 I was told. After leaving at 3.30 I was relieved. I hate courses like this. Put me behind a bar for 14 hours straight any day of the week that sit me in a classroom listening to someone talk. I get so tired being talked to. What did I learn? Well some useful stuff about laws in WA regarding alcohol. I now know that the way they operate in this country (well state) and manage alcohol makes the UK look archaic - about the the only thing! The emphasis [View Full Entry]

Hello hippie camper
Hello hippie camper
Goodbye Britz camper
Having returned our campervan in Alice Springs and sold all of our camping stuff (tent, sleeping bag, chairs etc) we had taken an internal flight over to Cairns. We booked into a hostel and instantly regretted it!! Not sure if we were just missing the freedom and privacy of our campervan or whether we just didn’t like being kept awake until 3am in the morning by the group of young people playing drinking games below our window. Was this what we had in store on the east coast? Ever get the feeling you’re 20 years too late for something?? As we [View Full Entry]

After my trip to Cap's place, it was time to sort out the clothes, pack the bags, have a farewell dinner with Mark and Warren and off to LA. I spent two days just relaxing in LA, went on a trolley ride to the beach and shops and nothing much else. Home was via the A380, a big plane which took off and landed with ease. Although it was a good plane, I had wanted to upgrade to have one comfortable trip, but alas, the plane was full and no chance of an upgrade. Back home, the grass was 'as high [View Full Entry]

The only way to access Cape Tribulation is via an old car ferry from Daintree which takes approx 10 cars at a time across the river. After crossing we drive up 30km through the midst of the rainforest, a canopy of trees across the road as we drive along the winding and sometimes scary road. We had planned to stay at Noahs campsite but we soon find out when we get there that you have to pre register by phone/internet....and there’s no phone signal. After driving another 7km to the local store we were told not to bother phoning as the [View Full Entry]

The Swan River foreshores, on both the city side and around South Perth, provide pleasant walking and cycling trails. Grassy parkland lines much of the Swan River, which sweeps by the city centre. If you are touring by car, the circuit route around the Swan River foreshoe is a must. This is also popular for hiring a bike for touring around, for some this is a reason to visit Swan River. Hiring a sailboat to sail around the river is also suggested, or a picnic and see the sunset. Campervans can get a lucky stay at Per [View Full Entry]

DAY 348 We’ve got half a million! Dollars! Yea we wish! But no, with this blog entry today we have achieved half a million words typed on the blog. Wow we think that is amazing! Today we have just hit just over 500,000 words, so we are quite pleased with my achievement. Today is no ordinary day, today is my birthday, and Caroline said something puzzling yesterday, she said “sorry your birthday is not going to be very exciting”. Mmmm, lets just consider that, NOT VERY EXCITING, well we have been lucky enough to be able to have a year off [View Full Entry]
