Since arriving in Margaret River it became clear that a car is a neccessity in this part of the country. The public transport is much like back home. I cant even walk to the beach and everything else is out of walking distance too so I've been somewhat stuck in this small town. From Wednesday I've been looking for a car and on thursday I thought I had found a van to buy but when i took it for a check over on the friday the car mechanic told me he wouldn't touch it. I asked about even as short term transport and his response was that it could last out a year without any work or in a month it may need $1500 of work done....yeh I didn't buy it after that.
I wasn't that bothered, these things happen but I bought some starburst to cheer me up anyway. I was chopping away when a bit hard on my labret and not only did it hurt like hell but a small chip of tooth came away. I was so upset... the world was against me... I could envisage a pile of dental bills along with worried I might lose the tooth as it hurt that bad.
I calmed down and thought rationally... it wasn't the end of the world. So even though I wasn't feeling up to any more car searching in fear I may encur more bad luck, like crashing a car on the test drive, I went where the hostel manager had seen some cars for sale.
I walked up and there was a white (all the cars here are white), ford wagon. It looked very clean so I took a sneaky peek... was selling for $1195!... what was going to be wrong with it!
I went into the shop where it was being sold from and asked to take a closer look. He gave me the keys and told me to bring it back after I'd had a look and taken it to the garage! I was shocked. Anyway I jumped in, tried to remember how to drive an automatic and off I went.
I took it back to the hostel where a guy who knew some stuff about cars had a closer look and gave the thumbs up. 30 mins later I had the car.... for $1100.... thats about 500 quid! and its a 4 litre engine, but you dont need insurance over here!
Sweet! I have a car... yay
