Day 216 - Lane Pool Reserve (Dwellinup) to Walpole via Bridgetown! What a good nights sleep that turned out to be! We weren’t sure we’d done the right thing, going to bed just before 9pm when campers elsewhere seemed to be taking the party to the next level. A young lady squawked (I’m sorry, there are no other words to describe it) her way through a song declaring joyfully at the end “I’m really good at this” which had us both groaning in a laughing, shaking our heads kind of way! Our heads hit the pillow though and we were both out like a light despite the glorious serenading! The birds chattered this morning and it was lovely to wake up in a forest for the first time in months, we’ve missed huge, tall trees! The ... read more

Friday 6th - 8th March 2009 Our first stop was Walpole where we had arranged to meet our friends, Kerry and Steve who had travelled across from Denmark for a couple of nights to try out their new camper trailer. We arrived just after 4pm and had time to set up before Kerry and Steve returned from a walk. The following day we enjoyed a walk to Sandy beach, canoeing on the Nornalup Inlet and a tour of the surrounding area that included the township of Walpole and the highlight was a walk up to the vantage point at Conspicuous Cliffs. Steve shouted us to afternoon tea at a coffee house in Walpole where we indulged in some high calorie treats! In the evening Steve treated us to some of the gigantic T-bones from a beast ... read more

We forgot to mention that at this caravan park there is a doggy wash spa and for $8 you can wash the dog it also includes the soap and conditioner. Well we caught Bailey and Chloe doing the rain dance and of course Chloe Bear did an extra jig for good measure. Those who know her well, knows that as soon as the doggy towels and bath come out at home she does the runner. So today we headed off to Cape naturalise where the shortest lighthouse in Australia is located. It stands at amazing height of 20 mts and is set about 200 mts back of the cliff edge due to the ground being unstable. The headland is 123 mts above the ocean. The lighthouse was built in 1903 and opened April 1904. The ... read more

First stop today was a cidery. Del and Rhod sampled some of the scrumpy on offer but driver Drew could only taste the alcohol free stuff. Mind, as a hater of cider I didn't mind too much and I do have to admit that I was easily persuaded into trying some of the unoaked chardonnay which was awesome - we left with a bottle. Next was a woodcraft place that makes everything, including the building itself, out of reclaimed native australian wood which can't be grown sustainably so this is pretty much the only way you'll get something made out of karri, marri or jarrah - the three main types of tree in the south-west. Am I sounding a bit geeky yet? Then it was on to the Gloucester Tree, the tallest fire lookout tree in ... read more

Another early start today - 7am - eek! They like their early starts these Ozzies! Drover through the Blur forrest with its humoungous karri trees, we went up to cape Leeuwin where they is a lighthouse at the point and it's where the 2 Oceans meet! Indian Ocean (right of the lighthouse) and the Southern ocean (left of the lighthouse). Crazy! we went to see the water wheel that provided water to the lighthouse workers and family and after a few years due to the high level of calcium it all coroded and was Kaput! oooh dear! On the way back down from the poin there was a poisonous snake in our way in the road! Needless to say we jumped out the van to get a closer look! Rex the Chinese guy was getting a ... read more

Our hostel is located right in the centre of the Tingle and Karri forests, and the area is popular with walkers and those who wish to spend some time enjoying nature and tranquillity. Started off the day with some fresh air and exercise by doing a scenic walk around the Knoll. Spotted two green parrots which flew over us & saw lots more pelicans on the beach. Then we drove to see a Giant Tingle tree set in the heart of the forest, down a gravel track. Next we visited Mandalay beach to see the elusive shipwreck! Apparently it is possible to view the shipwreck from the beach every 10 years - no luck today! A wild natural beach with crashing waves, quite isolated - just a few fishermen. Back to the Knoll in the evening ... read more

Set off on our journey west to Walpole. First stop was Mount Melville to get one last view of Albany before we left. Great views from the observation tower of the turquoise waters off Albany's coastline. On the way to Denmark (a town - not the country!) stopped for lunch at the outstanding beach of Greens Pool. (Unfortunately being school hols & an outstanding beach, everybody else was there too!) However if you walk round to Elephant Rocks you will find another fantastic cove with clear turquoise water, white soft sand and a much quieter beach - yippee! We sat on a rock & contemplated swimming & although the water wasn't too cold we thought we'd better head on to see more beautiful things! One of our favourite places though.

Well it's been a blissful week in WA. The sun has pretty much shone on us for most of the week - except for a shower or two on the track on Thursday. I'll get the walk info out of the way & move on to more interesting subjects. Spectacular is the easiest way to describe the scenery here in the south west. If my camera takes one more photo of a tortured, rugged coast line it'll probably freeze up! It's all very much like the Great Ocean Road without the road. We're walking through fairly rugged country, over cliff tops and in the back bush of the "Great" Southern Ocean (we think they need to put "Great" in there - they do it for all other Australian things). We're usually the only two people walking ... read more
