I was up early this morning and I headed down to the pier to catch my ferry to Rottnest island which is just off the coast of Fremantle. It's about an hour ferry ride from Perth up the river out to Rottnest island. Once the ferry landed on Rottnest island I hopped off and grabbed the bike I rented. It's been a while since i've ridden a bike but I hopped on with my map in hand and headed off to see the sights. I started out ok and seeing some of the coast on this island was amazing. But the road started getting quite hilly and it was hot out so I was sweating a lot. SOme of the hills I had to walk up because I had no energy.
I stopped at a few different spots taking pictures of the beautiful beaches. After seeing how long it took me to get where I was I figured I wouldn't be able to bike the whole island so I took a turn and headed down to some of the swimming beaches. The island is designed for bike riders as there are no cars on the island except a few maintenance
vehicles. I was taking a water break when I spotted a quokka hopping my way. Next thing I knew 3 or 4 had come out of the bushes to check me out. They are sooo cute.
This island was called Rottnest because it was founded by a dutch explorer and when he came on the island he thought the quokkas were giant rats and named is Rat's nest which in dutch is Rottnest. They are looking for food from me but I know not to feed them so I snap a few pictures and head on my way. I got to the first beach where a few other people were in the water and sitting on the small beach. I stuck my feet in to cool off for a bit and ate my lunch but some big flies that kept trying to bite me were annoying me so much I decided to hop back on my bike and keep going.
By this point my butt was hurting SOOOO much from the bike seat that I was not really enjoying myself. But I had to keep on going. I was able to get myself back to the only town
on the island and stopped for a bathroom break and a walk around for a break from the bike. I decided to hop back on the bike to go to the best swimming beach on the island. It didn't disappoint when I got there. Stunning beach and a few people around. I stripped down to my bathing suit and hopped in. SO AWESOME! The water was nice and warm and the waves nice and gentle. You could easily see the coral around and schools of fish.
I spent an hour here before getting changed and biking back to the ferry port. Had I known that there was a hop on hop off bus that takes you around the island I would have done that over the bike as it was too hot for me to be riding and my butt hurts so much! But all in all it was a great day and a beautiful island. I hopped back on the ferry and made my way back to Perth.
