G'day Pop Pickers, Well today was my first full day in Perth, a much bigger city than Adelaide from what I can see. As Oli isnt'd due in to Perth untiul Tuesday morning, thought I would try to do a few days work on Sunday and Monday. Spent 4 hours trawling the streets of Perth like some homeless Alccie looking for my fix of internet. They've got internet in the hostel I'm in, "The Billabong Backpackers Resort $23 p/n" but nowhere I can hook up with my laptop. The cheapest place I can find is $3 an hour and a 10 min walk from hostel so will be in there tomorrow "grafting". Have got friendly with a 23 year old fresh grad from Southampton called Ben, a nice bloke and we will be off to hit ... read more

The first week of me and Lyndsey's adventure out west had us going on a tour up the west coast. We were with a group of about twenty fellow backpackers for a five day tour. We did some fantastic things and saw even greater stuff. To me the most amazing part of this area is how unpopulated it is. It is so beautiful but we would literally drive for hours without passing a car on the road. ... read more

I arrived in Perth after a grueling flight from London to Singapore and then straight to Perth. I got to the hostel at 3:30 local time, despite not sleeping for over 40 hours the jet lag still got the best of me and I drifted off at 06:00 and woke up at 18:00. The hostel, North Lodge Accommodation, was small but cosy and I had a room all to myself for $40 a night. Perth is a beautiful city, very clean and safe. Kings Park is a good day out, walking round the gardens and tree top walk. I took the long was round as I didn't realise there were only 2 entrances. The nightlife in Northbridge was packed on Saturday night with live and a lively atmosphere. There were some randoms about though, after purchasing ... read more

Having landed in Perth Domestic airport following a 3 hour flight from Adelaide I couldnt seem to find any public transport to Fremantle where I had provisionally booked a room for tonight and Sunday. It would have cost me $25 for a shuttle bus and would have to wait 1.5 hrs for the next one so I decided to phone another hostel (The Billabong Backpackers resort) in Perrth and book 3 nights there (thius included free pick up from the airport). I then cancelled the hostel I'd booked in Fremantle and journeyed on with Warren from the Billabong after he came to get me. The Billabong is a large hostel with upto 250 guests, mostly foreign European (French, German, Spanish) as it is attached to an english language school where they all study during the summer ... read more

Me and Lyndsey have been in Western Australia for the last three weeks and I kid you not that we have been in many a places where the latest invention is the telephone. Anyway, we head back to good ole Manly tomorrow, so I will definitely be able to write more and put up lots of pictures of our latest adventure. Let me just say we have had the absolute most fantastic time on the West Coast. We have seen and done so many great things, I can't wait for yall to see the pics. We both fell in love with the most amazing little town in the north and even extended our stay by a week to stay there longer. All in all, ... read more

Aware at 4am. Damn jetlag!! Got up and made tea for Richie and myself. Mum came out about 4.30ish. Drank tea, looked around the house and listened to the morning song of the local birds. I made breakfast. Set up mum’s new DVD player and we watched a few episodes of ‘Allo ‘Allo. Had showers and got dressed. Mum let me drive to Rockingham to see were I’d grown up. It has changed quite a bit. Went to Val and Ernie’s place for a beer and a chat. They live opposite the old house so got to see it from the outside. Went to Rockingham Beach for fish and chips. Really nice. Cooked fresh when ordered. Drove down to Mandurah and watched the water go by on the estuary. Mum wanted to do some veggie shopping ... read more

We landed at Singapore on time. Went and had a shower then to the sunflower deck. It was very hot and humid there. After sitting in the heat we decided we needed a beer. Managed to justify the beer at 8.30 am, by saying it is 12.30 am in London and we are thirsty! At 9.00am headed to the gate. Looked at the telly and our gate was closing. Fortunately we didn’t have far to go. Straight through security and on to the plane. We were down the back of the plane. The man sitting next to us moved so we had three seats to ourselves. That was very good news because my in-flight entertainment unit didn’t work properly. The plane took off. After a while I congratulated and welcomed Richie to the Southern Hemisphere. ... read more

I didn't get to sleep until 3.30ish. Argh! Alarm at 5am. Got up, had a cup of tea and then shower. Checked out and caught the Hoppa Bus at 6.03. Bus picked up at two other hotels and then to the airport. Arrived 6.30ish and went straight to the check in desk, only to be waiting until 7am. We were fifth in the queue. We checked in. Good nights, the massive “balls-up” wasn’t as massive as I thought. We were sitting together from London to Singapore, but Singapore to Perth we were in totally different areas. We managed to get Richie on the left of the plane from Singapore to Perth so he could see the vast redness of Australia. Everything turned out well in the end. Looked around the duty free section and I decided ... read more

My first night in Australia was horible, i spend more time crying and calling than sleeping but after for next two days i slept so much then my homestay mother was worried she juste told me that few weeks ago. I didnt know i slept for 2 days i think it's why when i arrived in my new house i felt like everything was going wrong i was tired.

Had good wander around Perth, so clean and orderly...but in a nice way. Australians really nice. Ended up in King's Park, just lovely. Botanical gardens, raised above the city, great views of the city, Swan River and area. Finished in an Irish bar Durty Nelly's for wino and ale pie (Spen - not D!). Got to say, the only down side of otherwise perfect Oz is the expense for out of work travellers....however, thanks for the tip Fruity and Luce, got a nice 4 litre wine box chilling back in the room for later! Perth work ethic something to aim for too. Get physically thrown out of shops/cafes at closing time - up to 30mins before closing time they are very relucant to partake in any customer service. Note to self...must get a job in Perth. ... read more
