We landed in Perth after a16 hour flight on the Quantas Dreamliner! Terry and Sue were there to meet us at the domestic terminal. Jane and Steve were also there but went to the international terminal and had to come over to the domestic terminal. We had introductions and chatted over cups of coffee. We will meet up with Jane & Steve next week when we travel north to Kalbarri. It was great to be back in Mandurah in th warm sunshine.... read more

"Travelling is not something you're good at. It's something you do. Like breathing" - Gayle Foreman Travel to foreign countries involves a bit of a hard slog and for South Africans, probably a bit more of a challenging process than most. In the case of travel to Australia there are a number of hoops one has to navigate and jump through before you finally arrive there. It starts with the visa application. Sort of easy enough as it can be done online and after filling in endless pages of questions probably designed to reassure the Aussie Immigration blokes that you aren’t a convicted murderer or worse, you get to the really exciting part where you need to upload documents. Here they want hard copy, documented proof that you have some cash, you won’t be a burden ... read more

Preparation over. Departure time arrived. Ready to Explore and Enjoy. Smiling BIG time. A little about Perth International Airport - There has been significant investment and planning for the future at the Perth Airport. It is envisaged that all commercial air services will operate from one precinct, Airport Central, offering a world-class airport experience. The International Departures has been transformed with expansion and refurbishment that has greatly improved the outbound international customer experience and now offers a far greater range of retail and dining choices, along with improved check-in, outbound immigration and security screening areas. The flight on EK425, Perth to Dubai (11hours), consisted of attempted sleep, eat (Scrambled Eggs), pee, movie (Death of Stalin), attempted sleep, pee, movie (Hostiles), pee, attempted sleep, pee, movie (Thank You For Your Service)... read more

4thMay the beginning of our trip: We arrived at the airport at 6 am in the morning only to find that our flight was delayed for 3 hours by bad weather in Guangzhou. So after wandering around and having some brekkie courtesy of the CSA (China Southern Airways) and being bored witless, we left at 11.30am. Flight was uneventful, movies were limited to one English and one Chinese for the whole trip (8 hours). All looked ok until we circled Guangzhou airport for a few times and the pilot announced that due to bad weather we were diverting to Shenzhen. Great! So arriving at Shenzhen airport tarmac ( only a few minutes away – near Hong Kong) we remained there for an hour or so until G airport was clear enough for us to have another ... read more

Day 127, 16/01/12 Went to the cinema at lunch time to see The Iron Lady and it was fairly good. Went on to Freemantle to have a look around the markets but they were closed so went to get a Subway and then back to the house. Jumped in the shower and did my final packing before being dropped off at Perth International Airport. Bought some Duty free and then boarded my Emirates plane leaving at 10:30pm bound for London Heathrow (via Dubai). Of course the only people I told I was coming home were my Mum and Dad so I could be picked up from the airport. Everyone else was in for a shock and I was very proud of myself for keeping it a secret since the flight was booked on the 15th December. ... read more

Well the time has arrived and we are set for departure. The car collected us at 7pm on the nose and we were driven to Perth International. Richard is a VIP with Emirates Airline. We arrived at the airport and the driver opened my door! I was a bit surprised especially since I was about to grab the handle. We bypassed all the people in the Economy queue and checking at Business Class. However the Business Class was full and we couldn't get an upgrade. Boo. Passed through immigration and got a refund on the GST for the new camera I bought. Then security easily but Richard was stopped for a frisk that took all of 30 seconds. The frisker wasn't even cute however I get the feeling, if it was me frisking we'd still be ... read more

Hi again, Well, the weather improved so we are able to complete things in Perth. But the first thing to say is that of course we watched the Royal Wedding as did most of Australia - they go nuts for it over here (C: one TV station has shown 40 hours of footage, starting at 9am UK time - and it's stil going on. If I've seen Wills plight his troth once, I've seen it a dozen times. And loved it every time). It's always a little odd watching pixs from somewhere you know well when you are miles away. All seemed to go well, and we went out to celebrate with burger and some live music last night - a 12 piece swing band and lots of locals jiving - excellent. On Thursday we were ... read more

In Perth Aaahh Jo and Mark, thanks for the hellos, I was on the plane thinking what the hell am I doing here and the realization I have no plan! I was please God please God make this work, we will see what happens hey ? :) I'm not sure what to make of airport security, they were checking for explosive residue or something, most of the passengers and staff were good about the whole thing. I just found it ironic all this effort into explosion checks while the real economic bomb instigated by our lawmakers and bankers ticks along unchecked. Anyway I'm going to try and upload those in the bag, out the bag pics. PS thanks to Telstra for the free internet, on this occasion.... read more
