Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Having travelled a third of the way northwards along Australia's mighty west coast, the southwest beckoned , but before that I had a grand weekend catching up with my second cousin Jon and his wife Penny and with friends of Lesley, Con and Liz. Both couples were very generous of their time and company and we spent happy hours talking about all sorts. It was great to renew relationships and make new ones so thank you guys for your generosity and I look forward to seeing you in my neck of the woods when you next make it across the oceans [View Full Entry]

Sunday evening we arrived in Pemberton. It’s a little town nestled among some fantastic rolling green hills. When we arrived, we showed up at the hostel to a bit of a surprise. Turns out there’s a pretty big backpacker population who works in Pemberton, and the main hostel is for workers. The receptionist then drove us a few hundred meters down the road to the cottage used for traveling backpackers. Very cute. Best part was that it was right across from the local supermarket. Score. That night we met our roommate from Germany, Wencke (pronounced Venx). She had been living/ [View Full Entry]

Hey gang. As you've all been rubbing it in that we've swopped seasons and you're getting a good deal for a change, I feel I should tell you spring has sprung! Weather is slowly improving, rolling hills are looking amazing right now and its almost time to turn off my electric blanket! I have been working hard over here doing lots of hours and have settled in well. Locals are actually pretty cool and I've had a few drunken eves at various farms. If anyone needs ANY fresh produce, im your woman! Ha ha. Now what have I been up to... [View Full Entry]

Hey gang! Just a quickie to get you up to speed. After a sad goodbye to Madonna, I headed to Geelong - where I started this whole thing - and caught up with Kate and Lou, friends of Tiss'. We had a good weekend, out for drinks and relaxing on the sofa. On Monday I visited the old haunts in Torquay. On Tuesday I visited the Trosky's (Tiss' family). And then on Wednesday I flew to Perth... And stayed for a day! I had planned to find care work but needed to do get a job while that was getting sorted [View Full Entry]

Yeah arrived in Pemberton (via quick stop in Busselton), a logging town with some national parks around and a couple of trees you can climb. Lost my bottle on the first (Gloucester) tree I'm afraid and only made it to about 15 metres. The room was in a house and had a decent evening with Ming (Malaysia) and Jo and Stein (Belgium). Next day we went to the Dave Evans Bicentenial tree, a higher one, and I at least made the midway platform. Set off for Walpole and visited Point d'Entrecasteaux and the Tree Top Walk on route. Heading for the [View Full Entry]

We are now in Big Tree Country and it is a chilly 18 degrees! We left the lovely beaches of Albany yesterday and headed to Green Pools which is yet another pretty beach. It was a bit overcast and trying to rain so it didn't look as nice as it could have done. It was still pretty though and I managed a paddle. After that we went to the Valley of the giants tree top walk which was great. It was a walkway suspended high in the trees. It was 40m at the highest. I really liked it but some people [View Full Entry]

Entry from Rich (12/12/08 8.30 a.m.) Tuesday 9/12/08 We ate breakfast at Pemberton Farm Chalets and watched the kangaroos in the fields outside. It was a great scene to wake up to. At nine o’clock each morning the farm owner feeds all of the animals and any guests are invited to come along. There are chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, calves, lambs and of course the hand reared kangaroo. The farm owner was a fantastic guide and teacher and he showed all of the children how to feed the animals. At the rabbit hutch the crowd of children waited excitedly as [View Full Entry]

30/10/08 Thursday Day 77 Today we decided to head to Pemberton which is about 130 kilometres from Augusta. It apparently has lots of forest kinda things to do. The town itself is pretty big. Again it’s just one main street but it seems a lot busier that all the others. We didn’t bother booking a space at the one and only caravan park but luckily there was a space for us. We found out that it was the one and only caravan park from the tourist information centre. We then headed to the Lavender & Berry farm. This is supposedly to [View Full Entry]

Happy to say we are on the road again and have got down to the south west corner of WA.We collected the car on Tues. but then needed to get some work done on the van in Perth on Wed.(long story) so eventually headed south on Thurs. The layover with John and Sue was a great chance to catch up, see the changes in Mandurah and relax a little from travel. Now we have 4 weeks to get ourselves across the south to Melb. The Nullabor Plains loom as the next big challenge. But first we are enjoying the scenic south west with rugged coasts, huge [View Full Entry]

We flew over to perth, got to see a few sights such as the kings garden with spectacular views over the city and took a daytrip to freemantle where we strolled around the harbour and boutiques before doing some serious job hunting. We found the perfect job for both of us in a tiny town, 3hours drive south of Perth called Pemberton, where they were looking for a couple to help them out. 40hours+ a week with accomodation and evening meals included, So we packed our bags and caught the next bus. We were given a 2 bed apartment which was [View Full Entry]
