After 1,469km I arrived in Onslow around midday, having done the inland route with dirt roads all the way from Mullewa to Onslow (over 1,000km). Good trip, but still a bit warm to linger at the Kennedy Ranges, where I had intended to stop overnight last night. Temp was still 43C and I abandoned the escarpment walk after 30 min because it was too hot (and risky) to do on my own, even with a 2ltr hydration pack. Nobody in the park - campground empty - so kept going and camped near a wind pump to get some star trail and moonrise photos (and some of the local wildlife coming in to drink.) New suspension worked well - got the car airborne twice over washaways and Mephisto took it in his stride! After travelling more than ... read more

Geo: -21.6363, 115.112Wow there is sooo much going on up this way. There is a huge salt works here with its own jetty. They load the boats via a very long conveyor belt straight along the jetty onto the ship. There is also a boom with gas and the whole town has been taken over by construction/mining/salt workers. We were lucky to book into this park as it has about 50 or more dongas for workers. There is also 3 very large boats in the harbour which house workers and vans everywhere. Apparently this park had about 50 van sites before this boom, now they have about 19 sites left. They are building 60 apartments and heavens only knows what else. The beach is amazing. Millions of shells and when the surf goes over them it makes ... read more

Days On The Road = 37 Last night Charles and I woke with the howling of a dingo in the park, what a noise and we were thankful to be safe in our beds in the van! Today we're heading to Onslow to visit one of Charles friends, Rick and his wife Jenny. We will be staying on his property so it will be nice to have some company and relax for a few days. We arrived quite late in the day and felt obsolutely shattered but we were welcomed by Rick and Jenny with open arms into their home. After a lovely surf and turf bbq cooked by our hosts we sat outside with a well earn bourbon and coke. We hadn't been in a house for a while so the feeling of space was ... read more

In an attempt to keep the mind from all the "what if's" we thought we'd take this opportunity to share some of our most recent adventures, some possibly a bit mis-adventurous! While we wait for cyclone Iggy to grace us with his presence, above is the current "prediction" of Iggy's path, however we are well aware of the non-predictive nature of cyclones so we watch, and we wait! Yesterday was spent tying down, locking away, securing, putting indoors pratically everything not bolted down around here in readiness for some pretty serious winds (yes, Jase, even worse than in your undies!). The best site to go to if you want to keep an eye on this system is www.bom.gov.au where you can click on Current Warnings for WA, and it lists all the relevant pages you ... read more

Firstly a very Merry Christmas to everyone, hope you had a brilliant day and that Santa left some nice goodies, except for you naughty boys & girls...you know who you are!!! Hope a top 2012 is on the way for us all. Well, here we are almost 5 months in, and still not a drop of rain! Instead we have the worst grasshopper plague you have ever seen in your life (they arrived about a week ago now, and are slowly mowing their way through every living bit of greenery on the station), we've had a week of well over 46 degrees every day and now we are threatened by a bushfire that is burning in a neighbouring station.......welcome to life in the outback! Our Christmas was certainly one to remember, or rather forget, depending on ... read more

After a couple of wage negotiations, we have signed contracts to an outback cattle Station! So once again, our short stay of about 5 weeks has turned into more like 5 months! Jeff has been enjoying his new role as "station mechanic" (the official job title) fixing all manner of machines & equipment - from a measley whipper snipper up to monster trucks! Early starts at 6.30am, an hour for lunch and beer oçlock at 5.30pm so quite long days, however there's been no mechanic here for 18 months so the backlog of work makes the day go by fast. Most interesting repair so far was a tyre change on a huge dump truck, you won't believe this but they light aviation fuel inside the tyre to get it back on the rim! Safety first, as ... read more
