A trillion stars, a billion grains of sand, a million drops of rain, 3.5 thousand kilometers of road, hundreds of mosquitos, dozens of wild animals, two people, and one land cruiser--our bush camping trip from Perth to Adelaide was nothing short of amazing. As we set out to explore the southeastern part of West Australia's coast and to cross the Nullarbor Plain, we hoped to have as much of an, off-the-main-road-outback-experience as possible. Rather than relying on conventional campsites and caravan parks, our goal was to find secluded spaces that would allow us to experience and appreciate the Australian wilderness. For the most part we were able to do this. Four nights were spent bush camping in fairly isolated National or Conservation Parks, and three nights were spent in more conventional National Park campgrounds. Other than ... read more

Geelong to Kalgoorlie We are free camping 128 kms north of the Nullarbor Roadhouse, 100 meters from the edge of the Bundra cliffs overlooking the Great Australia Bight. We arrived in the dark having stopped at the Roadhouse for 3 hours where we had television reception for the big game between Geelong and St Kilda (for ORs - overseas readers - both football teams were unbeaten 14-zip, the first time in AFL history this has occurred). It was a great game, it went down to the wire, but Geelong was beaten by a single goal. En route to Adelaide we drove through fierce storms, high winds and driving rain but since Port Augusta we have been greeted by sunny weather and moonlit nights. We free camped at Dimboola, but spent the second night with the old ... read more

We have crossed the Nullarbor and arrived at Norseman. It's 4.30pm - 2 hours behind Sydney - and at last we have computer service (no phone service for me, though Doug has with his 3G, thank you Telstra). It has taken us three days to cross the Nullarbor. The first day seemed endless with the very sparse terrain, lots of rain and a bit of wind - the front we'd been staying at Ceduna to avoid! Our first night was at the Nullarbor Roadhouse, on a flat, barren part of the Plain, where there was a motel behind the roadhouse and a patch of bare ground next door - the 'caravan park'. Power but no water, $1 for a shower (Doug was brave but said it wasn't the best, I stayed in the motor home and ... read more

While I write this it has just started hailing !!, I reckon I must have caught a piece of string attached to the storm clouds in Lake Clifton and I am dragging it across the South Coast. Having a mud slide go through the camper last night at 2am was interesting to say the least, my first thought was that the trailer would be pulled over, but the Tardis held fast, only ended up with about a foot of mud inside the tent. As it was raining when I knocked down camp this morning and still raining now I am suffering the remains of the sticky mud inside the tent till it dries out a tad. From Ravensthorpe I headed south via Esperance, the trekked north to Norseman, nearly running out of fuel 300kms out of ... read more

DAY 159 We woke up early at Newman’s Rocks after a restful nights sleep, the Trumans were all scampering about and had been down to the Billabong to see if any Camels were around, all except Kahlia who was still asleep in bed. I got up and put the kettle on, and put the table outside so I could boot the laptop up and get on with the blog, we still weren’t able to get internet access so the blog was backing up. Caroline joined me outside, and we sat in the morning sun drinking our favourite brew. The Truman’s came back from their morning march, and were full of the joys of spring, well Autumn really. After a light breakfast we all just sat around talking and putting the world to rights, as the idiots ... read more

DAY 158 We got up and had a shower and decided to treat ourselves this morning and before we pack the trailer away we would go and have a breakfast Mundrabilla Roadhouse. We think that the Roadhouses on the Nullarbor have been quite good and very much a welcome sight when it gets to that time of afternoon. The order was placed and we waited in anticipation of this morning feast, something that we have only done once or twice on the whole trip. When it arrived our decision had not been wrong, it was a great breakfast (big) fits in there somewhere and would set us up for the rest of the day. Everything was packed away and we were rolling by 9.15 as the mornings are so much lighter in Western Australia. Our journey ... read more

After leaving Cape Arid, we stopped for lunch at Norseman and then continued on to spend the night at a roadside camp stop just west of Caiguna. It rained again, but only lightly. The next day we continued eastwards, stopping at Eucla where we visited the Old Telegraph Station ruins, which are slowly getting covered by the sand dunes. We crossed the border and set our watches forward an hour and a half. We didn't bother stopping at any of the Bunda Cliffs lookouts along that stretch of the highway because we planned to stop at the Head of Bight viewing platform. However, when we arrived there at 5:10pm we discovered that the entry gate is locked daily at 5pm. We should have checked ahead! Apparently, according to the latest brochure, the viewing area is only ... read more
