40 Mile Beach 19th May We stopped here for a few nights on our way north to Karratha. Located about 70klm south of Karratha the 40 Mile Beach bush camp is a great location to while away the hours or days for anyone seeking a natural ‘bush’ camping coastal campsite. The bay offers quality fishing, apparently, but also protection from most prevailing weather (read winds!) for the beach goer. The number of people here set up for staying in excess of 4 to 5 months just to fish, I guess in some way this testifies to the fact that there must be fish out there amongst all that water! I went fishing here (with soft plastic lures) and made a friend with a squid who for half an hour played fetch with my lure. As I ... read more

Well 39 days until I leave Karratha - and yes I'm counting. I was asked recently if I will miss the Pilbara and the answer? Nope. I don't want any Pilbara lovers to get offended here, but if we're honest, and I do always try to be, the Pilbara is great but Karratha not so much. I agree a place is what you make of it, but that doesn't make it any prettier, or have better restaurants or more sporting facilities. The 'I'll do anything for money' vibe is also unpleasant. They are the negatives, but there are many positives. Down to earth easy going people, life is full of simple pleasures and can be as busy or relaxed as you choose and.... well... it's close to Exmouth. So I'm chuffed I've had the chance to ... read more

We left you when we were in Karijini National Park, which we really enjoyed. There are two main gorges created by the base rock splitting and then being excavated by the occasional rains over millions of years. The rocks are dark red and there so much iron content that some of the rocks we pick up are actually magnetic! When we left the Park we undertook the longest days drive so far – 501km. Not as tough as it sounds. When we got onto the sealed road, after about 5km, we set the cruise control at 85kph. We disengaged the cruise control twice for left hand turns, and off once for fuel and again for lunch, and finally off at about 490km when we arrived at Karratha! The car changed down only once in that whole ... read more

On Sunday night at Barn Hill, the Station owners put on a roast dinner. 3 courses for $15 – yes we know sounds like old peoples tucker! Roast beef it was with lots of gravy, preceded by soup and followed by icecream. Included was a concert by an aboriginal family from down the road. Sort of because there were only two of them, so they rounded up a couple of white fellas and we had a band! Funny thing was, the black fellas played the electric guitars and the white fellas played the didgeridoos. We then proceeded down the coast to the Eighty Mile Camp which is on Eighty Mile Beach. Only good for fishing and shell collecting. Swimming is discouraged. After we arrived, the wind got up very strongly from the SE and it wasn’t ... read more

24 photos here On 5 August we started driving the Gibb River Road, an iconic 4WD road that has been upgraded over the years to accommodate the tourists wanting a real 4WD outback experience and it’s good for puncturing tyres. The road is 588km long down to the Napier Downs turnoff towards Windjana Gorge. We spoke to one couple who had had five punctures! We both got through without any punctures. However Murray had to replace one set of trailer wheel bearings which involved a 300km round trip from Mt Elizabeth Station to Imintji and return, which took about 5 hours. The bloke at Imintji, about two thirds of the way through, has a business basically just repairing and fitting new tyres and repairing trailers. Camping is on stations that have basic camping to Homestay type ... read more

Hi folks We had a lovely stay at Pete and Laura’s and once again, they made us really welcome. Laura’s netball team lost their grand final but put up a good fight. Unfortunately they both had to work while we were there, but we managed to sneak in a lovely day with them last Sunday, cruising around the local waters in Pete’s boat. We even caught a small fish. A few days prior, we had spent four nights in Karijini National Park camping in our tent???? It was really comfortable but I’m not sure if I can convince Rose to do anymore stays in the tent? I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Karijini. The gorges and walks around the area are special. After Karratha, we headed for Point Samson, a few km north, for a ... read more

Hi everyone After spending 3 days at the beautiful 80 Mile Beach...relaxing and reading and watching again the most beautiful sunsets..we are now in Karratha for the night..weather again absolutely gorgeous. 80 Mile Beach was hit hard by a cyclone in December last year..which just about wiped it out... the trees are slowly recovering..but the beach is still beautiful. We are now well into our homeward journey.. we called into the Pardoo Roadhouse and heard the news that Kevin Rudd has stepped down.. until today we haven't seen any TV or a newspaper.. came as a great shock. We will be out of contact for the next few days..so until then. Take care Kath & Henry... read more

It's been nearly 3 months since my last blog, so I thought it was about time for an update.... Following our roadtrip I had a one day stop over in Perth before I repacked my bags and started the next chapter of my adventure. This time my destination wasn't a beautiful beach location or a popular tourist spot; I was flying to the busy mining town of Karratha to begin 10 weeks of work in beautiful MacDonalds.... My first impression of Karratha was not great. Infact, I had such a horrendous first day that I would have happily got on the next plane out of there. I had started the day with such optimism; I was looking forward to going to a new place, meeting new people, and even starting to have a routine again after ... read more

9-10-09 We took off early & got on the road into a head wind again, we cant seem to get away from it. We are on our way to Onslow, on the coast. There is not much to see a few mountains & its very dry. It is still hot about 29 deg. We got to Onslow & set up, this Caravan park Beadon Park Village $25 a night ,is very dusty & no grass , but they are all the same here as they have not had much rain . We travelled 360 km today. We set up the TV so den could watch the Bathurst 1000 car races & I had a sleep. We then took the girls for a long walk to the beach & along to the fishing harbour, we got back ... read more

6-10-09 Well off to Point Sampson today, we have heard its nice. We packed up & got to Port Hedland at 10am, We needed bread , Fuel (97.9c gas & $1.41c petrol) & I needed some scripts. After getting all of the above we went to the port to take some pics to say we have been there. On the road we have not met anyone that impressed with Port Hedland. We setoff & the landscape changed from flat to a few mountains, we got to Whim Creek & there was a Caravan Park & Pub there, really quaint. We thought we might get a coffee there, but it did not open till 3pm. We had a wander, there was a lot of birds in cages & this one Cockatoo , we think was called Harry, ... read more
