DAY 3 BORDER VILLAGE-EUCLA ENVIRONMENT Today was a ‘very fun’ day. We made our way to the Telegraph Station Ruins and then take the sandy track to the Eucla Jetty which still has sections withstanding the pounding from the Southern Ocean. We spotted something, ‘large and black’, moving about in the water about 5-10m from the outer end of the jetty. Initially I suggested whale (stupid suggestion), Jane shark (really stupid suggestion) and we both thought it was a seal (a realistic suggestion). Even with the powerful binoculars we still couldn’t positively identify, so we settled on, “marine animal’ (a suggestion to settle the discussion). We made our way to the Nullarbor Links Golf course. We’d say we need a hands-on coaching session from Perth’s own 2022 US Women Open Golf Champion, Minjee Lee. We both ... read more

A quick start to the morning today and then a short drive of 190 km odd to Eucla. We had a few stops at lookouts over the cliffs into the Great Australian Bight, but other than that we headed straight on to arrive at a bit before 11 am, due to the timezone change. Unfortunately the caravan park has only one washing machine and it is out of order, therefore the dirty washing bag now holds over half of our clothes and takes up a fair bit of room in the trailer, but never fear, we have a plan in place. A quick 708 km to Norseman including one overnight stay in a rest area. Norseman is the last major town before we hit Perth. Arriving so early meant we sort of had a lot of ... read more

So our journey has broken into new territory today as we crossed into Western Australia. We left the Nullabor roadhouse this morning in ground level cloud, heavy rain and a miserable 7 degrees and it has rained all night so I rejoiced in our decision not to camp. So we reached the border with no incidents other than every time a huge road train passes going the other way there is a moment of blind, watery maelstrom as the air displaced and the water makes things interesting. It's a club here on the Nullabor and everyone gives a little wave, we slowed down to check on a guy pulled over who was grateful but needed no help. At the border a delightful official checked our car for forbidden stuff like fruit and veg but we had ... read more

A long day spent in the car, hot, dry, dusty, one long and straight bitumen road skirted by small shrubs and not a tree in sight, where else but the Nullarbor Plain. Yet half way along the Bight and a short drive toward the coast and we are given an amazing panorama of the waves crashing against the 80m cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. One can only imagine what the early explorer's thought when they circumnavigated this beautiful and yet treacherous expanse of the coast. We stopped at Head of Bight to view these 80m tall Bunda Cliffs of the Bight and hopefully we'll see some Whale's here on our way back! Next time we decide to do a seven hour driving day we won't do it when there's 3-4m of swell and northerly winds! ... read more

Day 60 – Tuesday 28th August – Lucky Bay to Moodini Bluff rest area (26km E of Madura) Last night’s rain luckily didn’t amount to much and the tent wasn’t very wet when we woke up this morning. Mark and I went for a walk along the beach while the kids had a lie-in. Luke has a cough and has been feeling under the weather so a bit of extra sleep will do him good. The sand on the beach was indeed white, but without the light of the sun and wet from rain and high tide it had a dull, almost dirty appearance. And because it was a cold morning we couldn’t feel the sand squeaking between our bare toes through our hiking shoes and uggs. Next time we will come here when ... read more

1. Money. We went on a great tour of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine. This is the huge pit that has been dug and is currently extracting 22 tonnes of gold a year. The hole is 3½ kilometers long, 1½ kilometers wide and 500m deep. They expect to go down a further 300m and progress further along towards town. The cut may cease in 5 to 10 years because they (a) run into town and (b) the ore body goes too far underground. They are already doing some underground mining to the north of the Superpit. There is not a lot of machinery, but what there is is huge. The trucks carry 200 tonnes of ore a trip and the loaders can fill them with four scoops. It is truly impressive and was started by Alan ... read more

Tuesday 29th – today we were leaving behind the beauty and relative civilization of South Australia to begin our trek across the Nullabor, which in total is some 1200 kms (from Ceduna to Norseman in Western Australia). This will involve some difficult, long days with many kilometers of fairly barren landscape. We had done quite a lot of preparation the night before so an early start was on the cards and we were ready to go at 9am. At present the days start chilly but soon warm up, especially when there’s a clear blue sky like there was today. We said a rather reluctant goodbye to Ceduna as we both felt we could have filled another day or two there, not least by trying to catch some crabs or trying the fishing rods out. Before too ... read more

After nearly 2 months in South Australia, the heat wave saw us packing very quickly. We could not face the prospect of another week of 43 to 45 degrees as forecasted. We decided to aim for Ceduna on the way back to the west, the object was to stay there one night and cool off a little, however, by the time we got to Ceduna from Port Kenny, at about 11 AM, it was already 46 degrees. I decided that I would move on to Fowlers Bay a little village by the sea; this would be better for all of us. It was a wise move; because when we got there it was only 35 and cooling as the sea breeze was coming in. Just as well; we could not use the air conditioning at the ... read more
